  • The first permanent European settlers

    Around 1653, some Virginia colonists moved south and settled in the Albemarle Sound area. They became the first permanent European settlers.

    King Charles II grants the Carolina colony to eight lords, who divide it into three counties.

    In 1677,John Culpepper lead a revolt called Culpepper's Rebellion.

    Swiss and German immigrants established New Bern in 1710. They named it after the city of Bern, Switzerland.

    Tuscarora War

    By 1711, Tuscarora frustrations boiled over, and they began attacking settlers. Troops from North and South Carolina joined the fight, and hundreds of people were killed on both sides in what became the Tuscarora War. Defeated in 1715, most Tuscaroras left the area.

    By 1712, North and South Carolina had split apart, with each having a separate governer because th province's government struggled to control the entire region.
