Louis XVI Calls the Estates-General
Estates-General: The legislative body consisting of representatives of the three estates, before making any changes. Louis XVI was well meaning, but yet again weak. He did however, choose Jacques Necker who happened to be a financial expert, as an adviser.France was in the middle of bankrupcy. Bread riots were spreading, fearful of taxes were denouncing royal tyranny. Louis finally summoned the Estates-General to meet at Versailles the next year. -
Parisians Storm the Bastille 1
Paris seized the spotlight from the National Assembly meeting in Versailles. The people in the street werespreading rumors that royal tropps were going to occupy the capital.The crowd demanded gun powder and weapons to be stored at the capital. The Bastille commander opened fire on the crowd after he refused to open the gates.They killed the commander and his 5 guards and released some prisoners who were being held there but found no weapons. -

This was not like any other riot that has happened. This event posed a challenge to the sheer existence of the regime. French have celebrated Bastille Day annually as their national independence day since 1880. -

On August 4th, in an all-night meeting, nobles in the National assembly all decided to vote to end their own privileges. They even agreed to give up on their old manorial dues, exclusive hunting rights, special legal status, and exemption from taxes. All men, the French were annonced, "born and remain free and equal in rights."The declaration further proclaimed that all male citizens were equal before the law. Women's MarchParis to Versailles. They were demanding to see the king. Most of the anger was towards mARIE Antoinette because she was elegant, and had everything made into her way & her way only. The women were rufusing to leave Versailles until the king agreed to there command. He wasn't to happy about it, but then he decided to just agree with it. -
Monarchy is Abolished 1
The battle started very quickly, becuase the revolutionaries thought the king was taking sides with the enemies. On August 10, a bunch of Parisians stormed into the palace and slaughtered many of the king's guards. A month later, citizens ended up attacking prisons that held nobles and priests accused of political offenses. Sufferage than began. Which means; the right to vote, was to be extended to all male citizens, not just the property of owners. The king was then accused of being a traitor -

to France. The king was convicted by one single vote, and then was sentenced to death. In October, Marie Antionette was then also executed. The popular press then celebrated her death. When the queen was on her way to being executed, she showed great dignity as she went to her death. -

The revolution and the war gave the French a strong sense of national identity. Nationalism is a strong feeling of pride in and devotion to one's country.A port city named Marseilles, troops marched to a rousingnew song. -

Reign of TerrorRobespierre a shrewd lawyer and politician, quickly rose to the leadership of the Committee of Public Safety. He became one of the chief architects of the Reign of Terror. The Reign of Terror was a time period during the French Revolution from September 1793 ti July 1794 when people in France were arrested for not porting the revolution and many were executed. Many of the people were mistaken for someone else or were falsely accused by their neighbors. -
The Thrid Stage of Revolution
Moving away from the execesses of the Convention, moderates produced another constitution, third one sine 1789. They set up a 5 man Directory and a two-hourse legislature elected by male citizens of property. As chaos threatened, Napolean Bonaparte, a popular military hero who had wone a series of brilliant victories against the Austrians in Italy.
