First Four-Year Degrees
The William and Mary Board of Visitors approves the Norfolk Division's first four-year programs. They are in nursing, teacher education and business adminstration. A dozen more will be added by the end of the decade. -
Graduation!
The first four-year bachelor's degrees will be handed out to 15 students. -
60 Point Game
Leo Anthony scored an amazing 60-points against Lynchburg College in the 1960-61 basketball season. ODU won that game 128-61. Anthony is second highest in career points scored. -
New Name for an Old Paper
The Mace & Crown got its current name in 1961. It was founded in 1930 and was then called The High Hat. -
New Mascot Name
Professor John Foster West choose the Monarchs as the name for the school's athletic teams. The name would "link the traditions of the past to the realities of the present." -
Moving In!
Students first moved onto the ODU campus for the first time. 304 residents moved into Rogers Hall. -
The Webb Center
The Webb Center was named after Lewis W. Webb, Jr. He was a member of the Advisory Board from 1947 to 1962, and a member of Educational Foundation from 1962 to 1974. The Webb Center is on the west side of Kaufman Mall -
Start of Diversity
Margaret Simmons becomes the first African American student to earn a degree, with a master's in English. A year later art professor A.B. "Alex" Jackson will become the school's first full-time black faculty member. Senior class president Ronald Horne would be the African American to earn a bachelor's degree in 1969. And Arthur "Buttons" Speakes was the first African American to be recruited athlete. -
Teachers of the Dance
Istvan and Ana Ament begin what would become a 27 year stint as directors of the Old Dominion University Ballet. Their productions of "The Nutcracker" would become holiday tradition. -
"Teach Your Children"
Five years after Woodstock, 35,000 people filled up Foreman Field for a concert featuring Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Despite the turnout, there will not be another major concert event for 24 years. -
The Statue
The famous lion statue is unveiled on Founder's Day in front of the Webb Center. Designed by faculty member Kevin Gallup, the statue is 1,000 pounds and six feet high. -
Sept. 11 Memorial
Hundreds gathered on Kaufman Mall to pay their respects to those that died a year earlier. Four members of the ODU family died at the Pentagon. -
Extreme Home Food Drive
ODU joined with "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" to donate food to those less fortunate.
