His assasination is often considered the beginning of a chain of events leading up to World War I. As he and his wife drove into town Gravilo Princip, a member of the Black Hand group, killed Ferdinand by shooting him in the jugular. -

The Arms Race
An Amrs Race is a competition of amred forces. In this case Germany envied Britians navy. The tense battle for bigger and better ships led to costly Dreadnought ships being built. This would eventually help start the war. -
First Battle of the Marne
Batlle fought on the Marne river. This fight would set the stage for four years of trench warfare to come. It resulted in a victory for the Allies. -
Second Battle of Ypres
A series of battles that lasted from April 22 - May 1915. It was the first time that Germany used posion gas on a large scale. The gas would become one of the most memorable and horrific things in the war. The people in the image appear to be wearing some sort of gas mask. The Chlorine from the posion was extremely painful when it came in contact with the eyes. -
Battle of Jutland
Largest naval battle of World War I. The Germans managed to sink 115,000 tons of British ships. There were about 8,500 casualties total. -
Battle of the Somme
One of the largest battles of World War I. It was the French and British against the Germans. When the fight was finally over there were nearly 1.5 million casualties making it one of the bloodiest military operations ever. -
America enters the War
President Woodrow Wilson asked Congress to declare war on the German Empire. On April 6th a Declaration of War was passed by large majority. -
The Battle of Vimy Ridge
A battle in which the main combatants were the Canadian Corps and the German Sixth Army. The Canadian Corps eventually fully controlled the Vimy Ridge after days of battle. -
Battle of the Lys
Part of the 1918 German offensive in Flanders. The series of skirmished ended on April 29th when the German High Command called it off. Both sides lost about 120,000 people. -
End of the War
On this day the Allied forces signed an agreement to ceasefire. They met at 11 AM in Rethondes, France. This day is now celebrated as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day.
