Assassination of Archduke in Serbia
Beginning a massive world war, the assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand played a huge role in history as we know it. The archduke was shot one early June morning in 1914 while he was returning form a visit to city hall. Gavrilo Princip, the archduke's murderer believed that by killing the Ferdinand, he would free the astro-hungarian empire. -
Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia
Because Austria believed that Serbia was to blame for the Assassination of the Archduke and his wife, Austria declared war on Serbia. Germany, Russia, and France also became part of this war. -
Battle of Tannenberg
The battle of Tannenberg took place when Russia marched into Prussia. Under command of Paul von Hindenberg, Germany crushed Russia, hands down. This battle is notorious for the fast movement of armies by train. -
Battle of the Masurian Lakes
The battle of the Masurian Lakes gave another vicotry to Germany over Russia. In this battle alone, 100,000 Russian soldiers were taken prisioner, even though Germany could not completely defeat the Russian Army. -
Zeppelins
On Septemeber 8th, 1915, A zeppelin droped bombs on Yarmouth. This zeppelin was 521 feet in length and 935,000 cubic feet in volume. Soon after this attack, the use of zeppelins increased incredibly. Germany used zeppelins to attack london and were only stopped because of the use of aeroplanes (used to shoot down the zeppelins.) -
Winston Churchill
After February, 1915, Winston Churchill resigned from his post as First Lord of the Admiriality. He then rejoined the army as a battalion commander. Early 1916, Winston became lietenant colonal for the Royal Scots Fusiliers. -
Battle of the Somme
The battle of the Somme was between the Russians and the Germans and lasted for some five months. The Russians were the first to implement the use of tanks although they were extremely outnumbered and their actions were futile. -
Armistice
In the conclusion of World War 1 an agreement was signed between the western allies and the German army. This agreement would become known as the Armistice, which stated that on the Eleventh hour of the Eleventh day of the Eleventh month the war was over.
