FDA declares that genetically engineered food is not "inherently dangerous" and do not require special regulation.
This event is impactful because the FDA declaring that GEF are not dangerous means that GEF can be sold anywhere without regulation, and then people will believe GEF will be safe and companies, like Monsanto, who makes GEF, will make a profit. -
European Union's first genetically engineered crop, tobacco, is approved in France.
This event is important because tobacco being genetically engineered shows that other non-related food products can be genetically engineered, which will open a new set of doors and people will try to genetically engineer other non-related food items. -
The first commercially GMO food was a tomato called Flavr Savr, was produced by Calgene.
This impacted genetically modified foods because this tomato was the first food that was genetically modified that was sold to the public and showed that GMOs could be sold publically. -
EU approved importation and use of Monsanto's Roundup Ready soya beans in foods for people and feed for animals.
This impacted genetically modified foods because this showed that some countries, like the EU, were confident in GMOs and were ready to approve GMOs into their own countries. It also showed that GMOs were being sold internationally. -
Monsanto lays off staff, its stock price falls, and it faces more lawsuits by farmers unhappy with the performance of its GE seed.
This event is impactful because people were now aware of what GMO foods are and how harmful they are, and Monsanto finally pays the price for that. -
Nestle and Cadbury-Schweppes go GE free.
This event is impactful because the companies that went free means that GMO is losing its grip and with Nestle going free, (a chocolate company), Nestle may persuade people to go organic, since many people love chocolate. -
Scientist found that 2 out of 9 honies on sale in supermarkets were found to be contaminated with GM pollen from British crop trials.
This impacted genetically modified foods because this showed that GM pollen could be transferred into honey by insects and people would now be more aware of how to plant their GM crops. -

This impacted genetically modified foods because Hawai'i restricting GMO coffee showed that some states don't want GMOs in their food and GMO were losing its grip with some states. -
Hawai'i is the first state for its entire agricultural industry in a state that has UNANIMOUSLY opposed a new GE crop.
This event is impactful because Hawai'i is looking out for its people, and not trying to make a quick buck and have people sick. Also, I hope states in the future will follow in Hawai'i's footsteps so their people might be more healthier. -
Total surface area of land used for cultivation of GMO has increased by a staggering 80 times.
This impacted genetically modified foods because it showed that GMO still had its grip on some people, even though there were bad cases about GMOs. -
Sadly, there will still be GMO's on market.
This impacted genetically modified foods because even though GMOs got a bad rep, that it would still be on the market and still be making a profit.
