  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    This stipulated that all the Louisuana purchase territory north of the southern boundary of Missouri, except Missouri, would be free, the territory below would be slave.
  • Whig Party

    Whig Party
    Split into 2 groups. North was against slavery and the fugitive slave act. The South was for slavery and the fugitive slave act.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    Wilmot Proviso
    Proposed no slavery or involuntary servitude in aquired territories from Mexico. Northernes supported, southerners opposed.
  • Free- Soil Party

    Free- Soil Party
    Believed slavery should not move into new territories. Not abolitionists. Supported restrictive laws on African Americans. Depend on wage based labor force. Feared a secret plan to spread slavery all over US.
  • California

    California
    Free state. Most states below 36 30 line were free. President thought it was best to let states decide free or slvae status.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    Henry Clay and Daniel Webster. Calhoun opposes to this. It was supposed to settle all debates about free and slave states. There was a new fugitive slave law. California free state. Utah and New Mexico were for popular soverignty. Sell of slaves banned in DC; possession still allowed. TX and NM boundary resolved.

    To help south keep a tight hold on slaveowners property. Allowed a force of federal commisioners to follow fugitive slaves into any state and bring them back to their owners.

    Book written by a slave. First book by a slave.
  • Know-Nothing Party

    Know-Nothing Party
    Also known as American Party. They were nativists. Group splits over slavery issues. When asked a question they said "I know nothing". Northern Know- Nothings lean towards Republican Party.

    Founded in northern states by anti- slavery activists. emerged in coilation of dispute.
  • Kansas and Nebraska Act

    Kansas and Nebraska Act
    Created land of Kansas and Nebraska. Allowed settelers to decide if they were gonna have slavery.
  • Sumner - Brooks incident

    Sumner - Brooks incident
    Sumner attacked Brooks with a cane. Sumner unconcious did not get to resume his position for three years.

    Held many events of violence debating whether the state would be free or slave.

    Attempt of John Brown, a white abolitionist, to form a slave revolt, Johm Browns attempts were defeated by US marines.
