Introduction
REALISM: The attempt to depict a subject as they are to exist, without any interpretations or bias. Producing something in the most realistic manner you can, in its natural setting and environment. Normally interpreting the common everyday life of a person. Photo: Jean Francois Millet, The Gleaners -
Objective
We are going to be creating a sculpture in the manner a Realist Artist would approach their work. Ultimately, we will create a figure in an environment that evokes the realist possible interpretation. Photo: Ron Mueck -
Step 1
First we will brainstorm about the subject and environment we feel goes correctly with that subject matter. For example, if I choose to create a figure of a skateboarder I would also have to think about where that skateboarder would be. Would the enviroment a skateboarder would be at be the skate park or a nursing home? Realistically he would be outside at a skate park, with his skateboard and most likely other friends. -
Step 2
Once your subject matter is decided upon the student will be given clay. The student can now create the person they chose out of clay in the most realistic manner that they can. The need to take into account the clothing that the person will be wearing, the body structure and accessories. -
Step 3
After having ample time sculpting their subject, they will have to create a setting. It was important for realist artists to portray their subject matter in their true environment to give it a untainted depiction of their everyday life. Using found objects and other materials offered the student can begin putting their subject into its correct atmosphere. This will enhance the realistic quality.
