    Missouri Compromise
    An agreement passed between pro-slavery & anti-slavery factions in the U.S. congress.This agreement prohibitted slavery north of the 36 30 parrellel, except for resentaly created state of Missouri.The House of repessentatives refused this bill first, but excepted it after an amendment was offered by James Tallmadge.The amendment said that further introduction of slaves to Missouri should be forbidden.Also all children of slave parents born in the state should be freed at age 25.

  • Mexican War

    Mexican War
    Between the U.S. & Mexico.Occured because of the annexation of Texas, There were disagreements on the border line for Mexico.War started when president Polk sent U.S. troops to the Rio Grand, which Mexico considered theirs. The war ended when the treaty of Gualalupe Hidalgo was signed. This treaty stated, Mexico recognized the Rio Grand as its northern border,gave up its claims to Texas, gave New Mexico & california to the U.S., U.S. pays Mexico 15 million, & the U.S. pays claim.

    Wilmont Proviso
    Major event that lead to the Civil War. Would have banned slavery from all territory gained from mexico during the mexican war or in the future.David Wlmont first introduced it to the House of Repressentatives, as a rider of a $2million appropriation, for the final negotiation on the mexican war( only 3 months into a 2 year war).It passed the House but failed in the Senate.Reintroduced & reattemped, but sasme results. jrank.org

    Compromise of 1850
    Article package of 5 bills. Defussed tension between slave states of the South & free states of the North, fallowing the mexican war. Drafted by Henry Clay, & introduced by Stephen Douglas. Created to to aviod secession or Civil war at the time, & quited sectional conflict for 4 years. It stated that people could vote to diside wheather or not to be a slave state. Also passed the Fugitive slave act, which stated that any runaway slave must be returned to their master.

    Publication of Uncle Toms Cabin
    Was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe & was a anti slavery novel. One year after its publication, there had been 300,000 copies sold in the U.S. alone. Added new supporters to the Abolitionist movement, & by 1855 wasd called the "most popular novel of our day". Lincoln said "so this is the little lady who started this great war" when he met Stowe at the beggining of the Civil war. The book was a vital anti slavery tool.Outraged southern slave states when first published.

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
    Kansas & Nebraska wanted to become states.This act, passed by Steven Douglas, declared that the people would have the power to decide if they were to be a slave state or not.This resulted in thousands of people flocking to Kansas & Nebraska to vote illegally on the matter of slavery.This would lead to a series of battles, known as "Bloody Kansas". Kansas & Nebraska were made into free states, even though the vote in Kansas said it would be a slave state.

  • Attack of Lawrence

    Attack of Lawrence
    Attack led by Sherrif Jones of 800 southerners on Lawrence, kansas. Occurred because Lawrence was printin pro-slavery newspapers and the surrounding areas did not like this. During the attack two printing offices were completely destroyed as well as the Free State Hotel. The destruction of the hotel was followed by petty robberies and looting throughout the half desterted town.

    Attack at Pottowatomie
    An antislavery response to the attack on Lawrence and was led by John Brown. During this attack a group of New Englanders dragged five men out of their houses and killed them in front of their families. Among the antislavery group attacking there were five of John Brown's sons.

  • Lincoln-Douglas Debates

    Lincoln-Douglas Debates
    A series of seven senatorial debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas. The main topic was slavery. These debates were held at seven of the nine congressional districts in Illinois. The districts were Ottowa, Freeport, Jonesboro, Charleston, Gaelsburg, Quincy, and Alton. Lincoln lost the election for senator of Illinois but the debates would lead to his nomination for president in 1860 after he wrote a book containing these debates.

  • attack on sumter

    attack on sumter
    Fort Sumter was attacked by South Carolina leading to Major Anderson's surrender. After South Carolina seceded from the nation they demanded that the US leave its facilities in Charleston. Major Anderson moved his troops from Fort Moulterie to Fort Sumter where there was a better defensive position. President Buchanan tried to reinforce and resupply Anderson by sending a merchant ship, the Star of the West which was fired upon. The end result was that Anderson was forced to leave South Carolina.
