This was a cruel, yet crucial, war. It is commonly thought to be about slavery, when in fact it was mainly political. Brothers fought against brothers, fathers, or cousins. Our nation was tearing apart at the seams. -
Beating of Senator Sumner
On May 22, 1856 Senator Sumner delivered a speech that severely insulted Senator Andrew Butler. Representative Preston Brooks, Butler's kinsman beat Sumner with a cane until he was unconcious. -
Dred Scott Case
Dred Scott, a slave who traveled with his master to Wissconson, where slavery was illegal, sued for his freedom in 1846. More than a decade later, the case reached the supreme court. Slave owners gained support of the supreme court, and Dred Scott was not freed. The chief justice said Dred Scott is property, and he couldn't be set free. -
Attack On Harpers Ferry
John Brown, a extreme abolitionist, brought together a crew. They raided Harpers Ferry, an important armor, to start a lsave revolt. No one joined him, and his to sons were killed. He was later hung. -
Presidential Elections
The presidential elections of 1860 were very difficult. The country was divided over slavery, and everyone had somehing to say about it. -
Lincoln Elected President
"Honest Abe", a very succsesful lawyer from the backwoods of Illinois, won the election. He would later become know as the best president. -
Secession Of South Carolina
South Carolina seceded, and wrote a decleration, stating,"We affirm that these ends for which this Government was instituted have been defeated, and the Government itself has been made destructive of them by the action of the non-slaveholding States. Those States have assume the right of deciding upon the propriety of our domestic institutions; and have denied the rights of property established in fifteen of the States and recognized by the Constitution." -
Mississippi Secedes
Mississippi seccedes along with SC. The Declaration of Secession for Mississippi states, "Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery - the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth." -
Jeferson Davis Elected President Of Confederates
Jeferson is elected as president of the confederate states. -
Fort Sumter Attacked
After the south seceded, Lincon promised to keep a firm grip on the federaly owned properties in the South. On April 11 through 12, 1861, Fort Sumter was violently attacked. the fort was waiting for new supplies, and only held up for 34 hours. The war that tore apart our nation was just begining. -
