Blue and Red Versions
These were the first Pokémon games to come out. The Blue and Red versions of Pokémon came out in North America for the Game Boy. In these versions you explore the region of Kanto. The starter Pokémon to choose from are Squirtle, Charmander, and Bulbasaur. You will challenge Trainers, Gym leaders, and the Pokémon league. These versions have 151 Pokémon. -
Yellow Version
This version also came out on the Game Boy and takes place in the Kanto region. This game follows the plot of the Pokémon anime, but is very close to the plot of versions Red and Blue. Instead of the three starter Pokémon, you start off with Pikachu. You will defeat Trainers, Gym leaders, and eventually the Elite Four. -
Gold and Silver Versions
These versions came out for the Game Boy Colour and take place in the Johto region. The three starter Pokémon to choose from are Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile. This game includes 100 new Pokémon. And they now have different sexes to breed them. There is also a time system with a real-time clock. Different Pokémon would appear depending on the time of day. After you finish the Johto region, you can challenge gym leaders from the Kanto region, and the Pokémon masters there. -
Crystal Version
This version is very similar to versions Gold and Silver. It was the first Pokémon game to include animations for every Pokémon. And now you were allowed to choose your Trainer's sex. Before, it was automatically a male. -
Ruby and Sapphire Versions
This version featured 135 more Pokémon than versions Gold and Silver, and was released on the Game Boy Advance. You are in the region of Hoenn. The starter Pokémon to choose from are Treecko, Torchic, and Midkip. There were now Pokémon Contests, double battles, Pokémon abilities and natures for each Pokémon, along with the reform of effort values and individual values. -
FireRed and LeafGreen Versions
These version were remakes of Blue and Red for the Game Boy Advance. It contained a new region, the Sevii Islands. Wireless connectivity was also added. This remake brought Red and Blue versions on par with the Ruby and Sapphire versions. -
Emerald Version
Not yet finished with the Hoenn story, the developers made the Emerald version to complement versions Ruby and Sapphire.This game included new features like the Hoenn Battle Frontier, the ability to re-battle Gym Leaders, an altered plot, and animations for all Pokémon, as in Crystal Version. -
Diamond and Pearl Versions
These versions came out for the Nintendo DS. There are 107 new Pokémon, bringing the total amount to 493. The three starter Pokémon are Piplup, Chimchar, and Turtwig. New features are running shoes in the beginning of the game, Pokémon contests, and a new wireless system. You can trade and battle with people from all across the world. And there is a Poké Watch feature. -
Platinum Version
Similar to the Diamond and Pearl versions. New Pokémon forms for Giratina, Shaymin, and Rotom, as well as updates similar to those found in Pokémon Emerald. -
HeartGold and SoulSilver Versions
These versions are remakes for the Gold and Silver versions for the Nintendo DS. In these versions, the first Pokémon in your team will be behind you, following you. You can also take snapshots with your whole team. It also comes with a Poké Walker, an attachment you can take around with you without your game. -
Black and White Versions
These versions will be coming out for the Nintendo DS. They will be featuring 156 new Pokémon. Unlike older games, you can't get any of the older Pokémon until you're finished the story. This game also takes place in the Unova region, which is a region based on New York instead of Japan. Everything about these versions will be quite new.
