Sir Clifford Sifton
Sir Clifford Sifton was in charge of settling western Canada. He advertised in Europe and the USA. This resulted in a massive growth in population, 2 million immigrated within the first decade of the 20th century. The pull factors included things such as transportation, freedom, land, jobs, education, health and cleanliness. This is significant in Canadian history because it increased diversity in Canada. People now can peacefully live with many other races. -
The Naval Issue
January of 1910 the naval issue occurred. In order to keep up with Germany, Britain needed money to maintain its Navy. Britain asked Canada to help out with the costs. Opinions regarding the issue were divided between English speaking Canadians and French speaking Canadians. Laurier decided that Canada would build its own navy. This event is significant in Canadian history because it was one of the first times that French speaking Canadians and English speaking Canadians strongly disagreed. -
Women in WWI
Life changed for the women when world war one started. The women replaced men's jobs while they were off fighting in the war as soldiers. The women began to work in banks, factories, offices, and ferms. More than 24 000 Canadian women enlisted as nurses. Over 1000 women were employed by the royal air force in Canada. Women also worked as ambulance drivers. This is a significance to Canadian history because it gave women the opportunity to prove that they are equally talented as men. -
Ypres Battle
In 1915 Canadians were sent to Europe to maintain the bulge, it was their first action. They used 160 tons of chlorine gas to open up a 4 mile gap in the allied line. The Canadians fought until reinforcements arrived. They stopped many possibilities for the Germans to break through the bulge. More than 2000 Canadians died within 48 hours. This is a significance in Canadian history because it showed that Canada stands on its own. This battle showed that Canada is a strong effective fighting force -
The Lustania
On April 30th 1915 a ship called the Lustania was loaded with passengers and cargo. Due to the fog the Lustania had slowed down, and was than struck by a torpedo. The Americans were outraged but they did not declare war. The Germans backed off on the attacks until 1917.The Americans than declared war on April 2nd, this caused the delay of WWI to break loose. Vimy Ridge
Vimy Ridge was fought between April 9th to 14th, 1917. This would be the first time Canada fought together as a unit. This attack was carefully planned out, 150 000 Canadians went over the top on June 9th at 5:30am. 3598 Canadians died, and 7000 wounded. This event is significant to Canadian history because it was the birth of Canada' s nation. They accomplished what the French and British couldn't successfully complete. -
Billy Bishop's Attack
Billy Bishop was the top scoring pilot in the British Empire. He was awarded with 72 victories, along with the Victoria cross. He attacked a German airfield by himself. Billy Bishop is honored for his heroic service in the cause of freedom. This is a significance in Canadian history because he helped bring world recognition to Canada's air force. Billy Bishop dedicated his life to aviation. -
Halifax Explosion
On December 6th 1917 a French cargo ship called the Mount Blanc collided with a Belgian ship called the Imo. The Mount Blanc was loaded with explosives. Once the ships crashed a huge explosion occurred. 2000 died and 9000 were injured. This event is significant to Canadian history because it destroyed a great amount of Canadian land and killed many Canadian citizens. It made us stronger as a country. -
The Winnipeg Genaral Strike to 1919
In May of 1919 a massive general strike occurred. This strike was held in Winnipeg. The citizens of Winnipeg were fighting for higher wages and better working conditions. This strike expanded across the whole country, 30 000 had joined within hours.This event is significant to Canadian history because after the whole strike dispute the labor leaders had given up and work life had changed in Winnipeg, causing an affect over the rest of Canada. It showed that we fight for what we believe in. -

In April 1935, 1500 men left relief camps in B.C to protest the conditions of the camps. They went to Vancouver but the mayor said that nothing could be done.The protesters wanted to present their condition straight to prime minister R.B Bennit. Only 8 men made it to Ottawa. Bennet had refused the mens wishes and he was horribly criticized for the way he handled the problem. This is a significance to Canadian history because it showed we fight for the proper and respectful treatment we deserve. -
The Holocaust
On January 20th 1941 the Nazis decided to eliminate all European Jews.The Jews were first moved to the ghettos, where they were over crowded, poorly sanitized, and hardly fed. They were than moved to concentration camps, and than to extermination camps. Here they were drastically killed and put in gas chambers to die. Over 6 million Jews died.This is a significance in Canadian history because a huge amount of Jewish lives were lost. Life was horrible and Canada was a part of it. -
Pearl Harbor
On December 7th, the Japanese arranged a surprise attack towards Pearl Harbor. The attack was made up of 30 ships, 6 aircrafts, 430 planes and 20 submarines. Over 2300 members of the American military were killed, along with 27 citizens. The Government denies the fact of knowing that the attack was going to happen, but still many thought that they were aware of what the Japanese were doing.This is a significance in Canadian history because it helped cause WWII, which Canada was involved in. -
Battle of Hong Kong
On December 8th 1941 Japan attacked the British colony of Hong Kong. Canadians were originally sent to defend Gin Drinkers line, but were than forced to defend the Island of Hong Kong.Things weren't going good and Britain ended up surrending the colony to the Japan. Canadians spent over 3 years in pow camps. Out of the 1975 Canadians sent to Hong Kong, 550 did not make it home. This is a significance to Canadian history because it was the first time Canadians fought on ground during WWII. -
Fear of Japanese in Canadians
After the attack at Pearl Harbor many Canadians feared a Japanese attack on Canada’s West. During WWII Canada's Government put over 2200 Japanese people in camps to separate them from Canadian society. The Japanese immigrates lost their homes and all of their possessions. In 1988 Canadian prime minister apologized to those who were involved. This event is significant to Canadian history because it gave us a bad relationship with Japan. -
D-Day, Juno Beach
On June 6th 1944 the allies landed on the Beaches of France, Normandy. 1400 Canadians were assigned Juno beach, it stretched out 5 miles wide. The Canadians were the only force to achieve their initial goal within the first day. Canada had lost 350 men and 1000 casualties. This event is significant to Canadian history because it proved that were are a strong independent country. We know how to protect our land and fight for our citizens. As a country we were very successful. -
The End of WWII
On August 6th 1945, president Harry S. Truman decided to drop a bomb called the "little boy" on Horshima, Japan. 140 000 were killed. Than on August 9th, he decided to drop another bomb called the "fat man" on Nagaski, Japan. 80 000 were killed. Finally on August 15th, the Japanese surrendered. This is a significance in Canadian History because it ended a war that we were involved in. War was over and Canada could now be at peace again. We showed strength, courage and independence. -
the Richard Riot
On March 13th 1955 Maurice Richard, also known as the "rocket", punched out an linesman. The commissioner had suspended Richard for the rest of the season and the play offs. The commissioner decided to attend a Canadian game on March 15th. There he was yelled at and peltted with garbage. Afterwards a riot broke out in the streets. This event is a significance in Canadian history because it shows that we take our sports very seriously, especially hockey. Canadian citizens acted negatively. -
Series of Reforms
Jean Lesage was elected in 1960. He brought a series of reforms in to change Quebec' s society. The power was once again put back into the hands of a French-speaking Qubecois. French was the language of business, education was taken away from churches, and they nationalized the hydro industry. This new joy would lead to the separatist movement. This is a significance in Canadian history because it has great meaning to us.We wondered why Quebec wanted to separate from the rest of Canada so badly. -
FLQ Kidnappings
On October 5th 1970 the Front du Liberation de Quebec (FLQ) had kidnaped a man named James Cross, this man was a British trades commissioner. On October 10th 1970 The FlQ had yet again kidnaped another man named Pierre Laporte, the minister of labor for Quebec. The FlQ had broadcasted their requests and demands nationally. This is a significance to Canadian history because it proves just how strongly Quebec wished to be separated as its own country. This caused the War Measures Act to be used. -
Terry Fox Dies
On June 28th 1981Terry Fox died. He was a young man who ran 5 280 kilometers in 143 days. Terry Fox is a special person, he had cancer and an artificial leg. He raised over 500 million dollars for cancer research. He died and ended his marathon because his cancer had spread. Terry Fox is a significance in Canadian history because he was a hero to all people around the world. He showed us that as Canadians we have hope and great strength.
