Ten countries, including the U.S and Canada, ormed a military alliance called the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Members promised to help one another if one of them were attacked. -

Nuclear Arms Race and Detente
The U.S was the first to develope nuclear weapons, but in 1949 both the U.S and Soviet Union have had nuclear weapons. By 1953 both sides have developed hydrogen bombs, which are even more devastating. It was very scary for citizens of both sides. However in the 1970's they had come to an era of detente which is a relaxation of tensions due to American and Soviet arms control agreements. The detente ended in 1979 when the Soviets invaded Afgahanistan. -

Warsaw Pact is Formed
In 1955, the Soviet Union and seven other satelite countries in Eastern Europe formed the Warsaw Pact. Unlike NATO, the Warsaw Pact was often resorted to by the Soviets to keep its satelites in line. The Warsaw Pact devided Europe into two different blocs, "eastern" and "western". -
Communist Cuba
In the 1950s Fidel Castro organized an armed rebellion against the corrupt dictator who then ruled Cuba. By 1959 Castro lead his army to victory and tranformed the country. It would be known as the Cuban Revolution. Th U.S attempted to bring down the communist regime. In 1961, an invasion was attempted by U.S. trained Cuban exiles. The invasion failed when Castro's men captured them. -
The Berlin Wall
In the 1950s West Berlin was very prosperous. So many East Germans fled to the west. To stop the flight, a massive wall was built sealing off West Berlin. The wall had a massive concrete barrier topped with barbed wire. -
Cuban Missle Crisis
In 162 the Soviet Union sent nuclear missles to Cuba. President Kennedy responded with setting up a naval blockade. Kennedy demanded the Soviets to remove the missles. This was the closest we have ever been to having all out nuclear war. The Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev agreed to remove the missles, averting the war.
