Albert Einstein's Theory of relativity
Albert Einstein unveils his theory of general relativity in which he proposes that mass warps both time and space, therefore large masses can bend light. -
Hubble's and Hooker's Telescope
Measured distance and velocities of galaxies. This telescope was the first major telescope to observe space in great detail. This was key to the development of The Big Bang. -
Alexander Friedmann
He discovered the expanding-universe solution to the general relativity field equations. He basically solved Einsteins theory allowing us to further our discoveries on the universe and The Big Bang. -
Hubbles Law
Named after Edwin Hubble which desribes how the galaxies appear to be moving away from us at speeds proportional to their distance. It's like the planets are accelerating out away from us. This was key to developing the big bang theory. This observation supports the expansion of the universe and suggests that the universe was once compacted and started somewhere. -
George Gamow
Gamow produced an important cosmogony paper with his student Ralph Alpher, which was published as "The Origin of Chemical Elements." This was known as the Alpher-Bethe-Gamow theory, which is measured levels of hydrogen and helium in the universe largely explained by reactions that occurred during the "big bang". -
CMB Cosmic Microwave Background
If the Big Bang matches up the universe was initially extremely hot. In 1965 Radioastronomers Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson discovered a 2.725 degree Kelvin. This discovery was later shared and earned the scientists a Nobel Prize. -
Bell Tower discovery
The radiation was acting as a source of excess noise in a radio receiver they were building. They concluded that the radiation was the noise of our once whole universe exploding. -
Hubble approved
Government and Congress approved the Hubble Telescope funding. THis was crutial to the discovery of our universe because without the telescope we wouldnt know very much we do now. The orbiting space telescope was named after famous astronomer Edwin Hubble. -
COBE (Cosmic Background Explorer)
Also referred to as Explorer 66, was a satellite dedicated to cosmology. Its goals were to investigate the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) of the universe and provide measurements that would help shape our understanding of the cosmos. -
Hubble Telescope
Hubble Space Telescope deployed into orbit. This telescope observed the galaxies in great detail to help the discovery of how our universe came to be.
