10 causes of the Civil War

  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act
This was a part of the Compromise of 1850. It stated that all escaped slaves would be returned back into slavery. Which meant if a slave got caught he would be returned back to his owners. I think this is important because well this is a sign that the South still strongly believes in slavery and wont give it up very easily.
  • The Underground Rail Road

    The Underground Rail Road
Everybody has heard and learned about the underground railroad. The underground railroad was a system that let slaves escape into canada and other Free states in the North. They would hide in people basement and cellars. I think this is important because this is making the Southern states very mad because they are in a way taking their slaves so it adds more tension.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
This was a series of measures that was intended to settle disagreements inbetween the Free states and the Slave States. It was a pakage of 5 bills. People on both sides disliked some parts of the Compromise. I think this is important because this is where we start seeing tension between the Free States and the Slave states.
  • Political Parties split.

    Political Parties split.
This is when the Wig party splits into to parts. They split into to parts the Northern Part and the Southern Part. The Northern Wig part is against the Fugitive Slave Act. But the Southern Wig part strongly agrees with the Fugitive Slave Act. I think this is important because its another sign of the splitting of the North and South.
  • Uncle Toms Cabin

    Uncle Toms Cabin
Uncle Toms cabin was a book written by Harriet Beacher Stowe. It was a book that said that slavery was wrong and evil. The book was intended to send that message as well. I think this is important because this book could have changed many people's opinions of slavery.
  • Dred Scott Case

    Dred Scott Case
Dred Scott was a slave that was bought by a owner in Missouri. Then his owner moved to Wisconsin/Michigian. Then his owner dies and he thinks he can get his freedom because he think sense he doesn't haeva owner and in a free state he can get his freedom. So he went to courts he went all the way up to the Supreme Court. But they denied him his citezenship. I think this is important because now this means that soem slaves are wanting to stand up for themselves and get their freedom.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
Bleeding Kansas was a series of violent events that involved Anti-Slavery, pro-slavery, and free states. It mainly took place in the Kansas Territory. It got so bad Kansas had to split its government. But it all ended when Kansas was admitted into the Union as a free State. I think this is important because it probably caused even more bad blood between the Slave States and the Free states.
  • Harpers Ferry

    Harpers Ferry
This is a event when John brown led 21 men both men and white into harpers ferry into West Virginia. Their he led a slave uprising and killed and held hostage many people. He also raided a federal armory for weapons. I think this is important because again this is another event that made more bad blood and tension between the Slave and Free States.
  • Election of 1860

    Election of 1860
This is when Abraham Lincoln was elected as President. He believed in the freedom of Slavery. The South did not like that so much so 7 southern states left the Union and formed the Confederacy. Then when Abraham Lincoln and the Union where forcing the other states that have decided to make a decision; 4 border states then joined the Confederation. I think this is important because thsi event was sort of the "Spark" of the Civil War.
  • Battle for Fort Sumter:

    Battle for Fort Sumter:
It was the bombardment and surrdender fo Forth Sumter. Fort Sumter was located in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. Then following that was the secession of the 7 southern States. Major Robert Anderson and 86 federal troops held Fort Sumter. Until the Confederates on the shores opened fired with on land batteries then soona after Robert Anderson Surrencdered. I think this is a important event because this is technically the first battle of the Civil War.
