  • All men are created equal

    All men are created equal
    This was declared in 1770 and was one of the most powerful and debated messages of its time. This led to a declaration being made and signed in 1789. In 1803, a rebellion was led by slaves to make the Frances sugar colony an independent one.

    This efficient machine was invented in 1793, It could clean cotton faster than 100 enslaved men could. This invention was actually meant to stop slaves from doing work, instead, this caused more problems for slaves.
  • The Louisiana Purchase

    The Louisiana Purchase
    The United States purchased property from France, it was 828,000 square miles long. This purchase nearly doubled the size of the United States. An issue arose, would these states be slave free or not.
  • The Missori Compromise

    Mississipi was a large section of Louisiana, and the congress had to decide if it was going to be a slave-free state or a slave state. New York said they would gradually get rid of slavery which caused the southern states to respond with a unanimous outrage. The congress then decided to make a compromise, Maine would become a free state and Louisiana would become a slave state.
  • Debate over states

    There was one important question, should the western states be slave free or not. This question wasn't really talked about until 1820 where it became a national security issue.
  • Politics (mostly democratic)

    Politics were becoming more democratic, and white supremacy was there. Slavery returned and it was more threatening. The democratic party seemed to favor white supremacy,
  • Westward Expansion

    A rebellion was led by Denmark Vesey, this threatened the lives of people in Carolinas.
  • More Slave or free

    The sectional crises happened in North America, should states be slave or free? The south said slavery was good and beneficial. At the same time, a congressman started banning slavery and won in Mexico.
  • The Mexican War

    The end of this war allowed the treaty of Guadeloupe to happen. They were thinking about expanding slavery. They had to sign a deal with the USA or fight a war they cannot win.
  • The Free Soil Party

    Moderate voters, leaders, and other people got a party called the free soil party. The free soil party was an anti-slave party. everyone else still voted pro-slave.
  • The compromise of 1850

    This compromise is basically a follow up to the Mississipi compromise. It tried to make things better for everyone but it only made things worse..
