  • Domain Activated

    The domain name "YouTube.com" was first activated in 2005. "After the infamous Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson Halftime show incident, the three creators realized they couldn't find any videos of it on the internet, after noticing that this type of platform did not exist they made the changes to become the first major video sharing platform.   • First Video Uploaded

    Me at the zoo was the first YouTube video uploaded. This shows the co-founder, Jawed Karim, at the San Diego Zoo.
  • First Slogan

    In June of 2005, YouTube created a new slogan for their platform. "Your Digital Video Repository."
  • New Slogan

    In December of 2005, YouTube launched a new slogan. "Broadcast yourself. Watch and share your videos worldwide." Later this would become just "Broadcast yourself."
  • Marketing

    NBC and YouTube partnered up with a marketing and advertising deal. CEO Chad Hurley rejected the idea to expand marketing, he did not want to force users to watch a commercial before seeing any content on the site.
  • YouTube Sold To Google

    Later in 2006, YouTube was purchased by Google for $1.65 billing in stock. This was Google's second largest purchase. This also assisted in kick starting YouTubes rise to be globally known.
  • Partnered with Verizon

    In July of 2007, YouTube partnered with Verizon to enable mobile users to submit videos using the messaging service. This allowed users to not need access to the website to utilize the program.
  • Peabody Award

    Three years after becoming a sited domain, YouTube was awarded the Peabody Award. They were given the award for being recognized as "being a speakers corner that both embodies and promotes democracy."
  • YouTube XL Launched

    YouTube XL Launched
    In mid 2009, YouTube XL was launched. This allowed for viewers to use the platform on televisions by the use of a gaming console.
  • YouTube Kids Introduced

    Early 2015, YouTube Kids was introduced to the world. First this was intended for only Android and iOS users. Now the app has spread to more platforms for use.
  • YouTube Red Launches

    Earlier in 2014, YouTube launched an add on called Music Key as paid subscription. In November of 2015, this was renamed YouTube Red and the scope of this subscription now went beyond just music. This included TV shows and much more.
  • Updates To Privacy Act

    Going into 2020, YouTube updated their privacy act requiring users who upload to mark weather the video was safe for kids or not. This was in accordance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act.
