Revolt of Panama
Revolt started to take plae. Gunboats provided support to the rebels in the Harbor. U.S. Marines were in Colon. U.S. recognized the Independent republic of Panama immedialy. American were alarmed by Roosevelt's role: they started critizing his "gunboat diplomacy" -
Signing of the Treaty
Frenchman of Panama signed a treaty. This treaty have perminant use and control of a 10-mile wide zone across the Isthmus of Panama. -
Struggles
Most challenging job was digging. Gillard 9-mile cut ditch through the mountains. 1,000 and more woked through all given weather. A constant problem were all the mudslides. Most laborers were West Indian of Africa. 20,000 barbados 6,000 and more workers lost their lives during the construction. -
Yellow Fever and Malaria
U.S. government began building Panama Canal. Malaria and Yellow Fever began to strike Panama. These diseases went widespread and caused there to be no work done till they were gone. William C. Gorgas an expert o diseases took care of this problem. Carlos Juan Finlay a Cuban doctor found that a certain mosquito gave of Yellow Fever. Ronald Ross an English doctor fond different mosquito gave off Milaria. Gorgas than ordered to clear brush and drain any swamps where mosquitos could be. -
Clearing of Yellow Fever and Malaria
Gorgas has nearly wiped yellow fever and has reduced malaria. Disease was the first great obsticle to building the canal across Panama. Real work on the canal couldn't begin till diseases were controled. Gorgas took up the clamp night air. -
Opening
Panama Canal was opened. Atlantic and Pacific were now joined after many years of work. More than 6,000 workers lost their lives during construction -
