    It was a controversial time, the churches didn’t agree with it because they felt threatened because there theories may not have been true.

    The Enlightenment
    The Enlightenment was a time of big change in Europe. The Enlightenment occurred around the time of the 1st of January 1700 to the 1st of January 1800. The cause of the Enlightenment was people wanting to have the right to believe in what they want without being told what to do. They didn’t want a lord or kind or the church telling them what they have to do. The effects of the Enlightenment are that people have the right to make up their own mind without being questioned about it.

    The Industrial Revolution started in Britain in 1750. This was when goods were manufactured quicker and cheaper than ever before. As a result of more goods being made more resources were needed such as cotton and sugar. As more resources were needed then more workers were. In the time of the ‘Industrial Revolution’ the slave trade also evolved.

    This was because more workers were needed. Everything had to be done by hand as there was no agricultural machinery so this made it very hard work and this was where slaves came in. This is where the abuse of human rights started and slaves were employed to do the work. Millions of Africans were brought to America to work as slaves.

    James Cook Discovered the East Coast of Australia-
    Captain James Cook first discovered the East Coast of Australia in 1770. James Cook was sailing around when he discovered it. This changed Australia, convicts and free settlers from Britain then settled in Australia Changing the way it was.

    Voluntary Migration-
    By 1901 it was estimated that over 15 million free settlers moved to Australia (new world) for a better life. Free settlers are people who chose voluntarily to move to Australia to start a new life. Voluntary migration could be due to either push or pull factors. Free settlers populated Australia greatly.

    Since the first fleet in 1788 convicts from England were sent to Australia to work as slaves. The prisons were full in England and there were no jobs available so people started stealing food and money. Little things like stealing food got you sent to prison back then. As the prisons were full they started sending the convicts to Australia to work for the government as slaves.

    This was a good thing for the free settlers that moved to Australia because they then hired the convicts as slaves to work on their farms for them.
  • First Fleet-

    First Fleet-
    Eleven ships left England on the 13th May 1787. These ships were known as the First Fleet. The ships were carried from England to New South Wales. There were around 1420 people on all the eleven ships. The ships carried male and female convicts, free settlers and officials. It took around eight months for the eleven ships to reach Botany Bay in New South Whales. The ships arrived on the 18th of January 1788. This is where Australia began.

    Free Settlers-
    Free settlers were people who moved to Australia with the First Fleet. Mostly they moved because there were no jobs back in England so they thought it was a good opportunity to start a new life. When free settlers got to Australia they usually bought farming land where they worked sheep, cattle and crops to make money.

    As the free settlers started buying land they needed people to work on them and do the hard labour. This is why they hired convicts as slaves.

    Indigenous Australians-
    When the First Fleet came to Australia in 1788 this had a huge effect on Indigenous Australians. They came and took over there land and homes. The Aboriginals did not agree with the First Fleet coming and taking their land. They tried to fight back but the English mainly killed them or made them a convict and turned them into a slave.

    Nowadays Aboriginal people have had an apology given to them back for how they were treated back when the First Fleet arrived.

    The battle of Pinjarra-
    After the establishment of Swan River in Western Australia in 1829. Settlers had begun searching for land to use, their search lead them to Murray River where a small group established Pinjarra. Aboriginal tribes weren’t happy with the European Settlers on their land and they began spearing cattle, stealing flour and occasionally attacking settlers.

    This escalated into a serious of murders. After the murders the settlers asked for military protection from the government. On the 25th of October 1834, officers set off and found a camp site with Aboriginal men, women and children all with spears and weapons. It’s not said who started the fight but after hours of fighting many people from both sides were injured.

    Before Australia was its on Federal Nation, Australia was a part of the British Colonies. In the 1900’s becoming a federation was an important issue for the people of Australia. It was an important issue as it would define Australia as a nation. After voting all the states of Australia voted ‘yes’ and Australia became a federation.

    This meant that Australia would have their own leaders and be their own nation. This was the beginning of Australia being its own nation.

    The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife is what led World War I to start. Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were killed on the 28th of June 1914 on the way back from Sarajevo.

    As they were returning from their visit, a member of the Serbian Nationalist group the Black Hand, Givrilo Princip shot and killed the Duke and his wife Sophie, a Duchess of Hohenburg. After the Duke and his wife were shot, the Austro-Hungarian Empire declared war on Serbia. As a result of this Allies and Central Powers were formed, therefore furthering the progress of the war.

    Gallipoli
    April 25th 1915 was the day that the ANZAC’s went to ANZAC Cove. They went to Gallipoli to fight the Ottomans but the Ottomans were aware that they were coming and were ready for them. When the ANZAC’s arrived on the shore the Ottomans opened fire and attacked. Many Australians and New Zealanders died or they were severely injured.

    We now call this day ANZAC day. Many people across Australia and New Zealand attended Dawn Services, watch the footy or have a minute of silence. ANZAC day is a day to remember all those who fought in Gallipoli for our country.
