    The Enlightenment
    The Enlightenment was when humans started to disobey and challenge their own religion.In the 17th and 18th century this cultural movement happened. The society began to challenge ideas in faith and tradition. Instead of believing in religion people started to believe science. They started thinking how things happen from science or themselves.

    The Enlightenment thinkers wanted freedom and thought that science would bring them a better life. Politics and the meaning of life were affected by the Enlightenment. The effect it has on Australia is now that not much people believe in religion. More people now believe in science.

  • James Cook's Discovery

    James Cook's Discovery
    James Cook's discovered the south-eastern coast of Australia on the 19th of April 1770. James Cook was chosen to organise a voyage; thats what caused him to explore the globe. James Cook explored the south-east coast of Australia. He discovered and named Botany-Bay. James Cook took possession of the whole eastern coast and eventually named it New South Wales.   • The First Fleet

    The First Fleet
    The First Fleet left England on the 13th of May 1787. The 11 ships that were headed to Australia were called 'The First Fleet'. The First Fleet arrived at Port Jackson on the 25th of January 1788, the following day the Union Flag was raised which showed the first settlement of Europeans in Australia. The settlement of the First Fleet is now 'Australia Day'. The definition of a convict is when a person does something bad against the law and are sent to jail.

    There were about 1350 people on the ships. There were 759 convicts on the ships. During the 8 month trip about 40 convicts died. The convicts from Europe were transported to Australia because America wouldn't accept any more convicts. The arrival of the Europeans effected the Indigenous people.     On the 25th of January 1788, convicts arrived at Port Jackson, Australia. Convicts were moved to Australia because of the crimes they commited. The punishment given was either death sentences, life imprisonment or transportation. The British government wanted people to fear the punishment 'Transportation'. Convicts were effected and were sent away from their family.The crimes in Britain started to minimize because of the punishments given. Convicts helped Australia by doing labour.

    The Free Settlers came to Australia on the 25th of January, 1788. The Free Settlers chose to migrate to Australia. The reason why free settlers moved to Australia was to have a better life. England would have been over-crowded and an uncomfortable place to live in. These people wanted a better life for their family, so they moved. The cause of the Free Settlers moving was it effected the Indigenous. The Indigenous were forced off their land from the free settlers buying it.

    Around early 1788, the Indigenous were forced off their land by the Europeans. The Europeans migrated to Australia looking for a better life, the problem was that there were Indegenous people living in Australia. The Europeans took their land and forced leave everything behind. It effected the way they changed. It made the Indigenous hate them at the time. The Indigneous tried to fight for their land, which in the end involved killing or sentenced to be hanged or punishment.

    In 1813 new pastoral lands to feed a growing population were opened up. The people were encouraged to the Australian colonies. This was done to slow down population pressures in Britain. The new settlers were encouraged to emigrate to Australian colonies to make a fortune as property owners, New British colonies were found & one new settlement example is Van Diemen's Land (1803), which later became the colony of Tasmania.

    The Battle of Pinjarra
    In this war about 14-30 Bindjareb people had been killed. The effect of this was that they were forbidden from eating the person’s totem animal or plant for a year; since a person died from their tribe. They were forced to work for the settlers to survive.

    On the 25th of October 1834, a patrol of 25 soldiers were sent to Pinjarra. About 70 armed Aboriginal people were spotted with the patrol several days after. Their camp was surrounded by Captain James Stirling’s patrol. They fought for several hours & two European soldiers had been injured. This battle started because of the European’s taking their land. Before the battle, the Bindjareb people speared cattle, stole flour & attacked settlers from time to time.

    A new Australian federation was formed on the 1st of January 1901. It was formed from the six former British colonies of New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia. The Commonwealth of Australia was marked as the beginning of an independent nationhood. The Australian States had their own leaders and spoke appropriately to one another. They succeded democratically and peacefully in becoming of an independent nation.

    Assination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife
    Archduke Franz Ferdinand (heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne) and his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg were visiting Sarajevo to inspect the manoeuvres of the army. As the motorcade passed through the streets, Gavrilo Princip, a member of the Serbian group the Black Hand, shot and killed the duke and his wife. It is also said the assisination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand caused World War I.

    Great Britain declared war on Germany
    On the 4th of August 1914 Great Britian declared war on Germany. It was the deicision that was seen to be the start of World War I. Belgium was a neutral country back then. Germany had doomed Belgium to an invasion. Great Britian guaranteed Belgium's neutrality. The effect of the invasion was Great Britain declaring war on Germany; which was basically the start of World War I.
  • Gallipoli Campaign

    Gallipoli Campaign
    On Apriil, 1915 the battle of Gallipoli was held on the Gallipoli peninsula, Turkey. Thousands of soldiers landed at several locations around the peninsula. Gallipoli was the place where many Australians died, but some did survive. The effect of this caused Australia to remember the soldiers who died for us. Part of that was with the soldiers who died in Gallipoli. The soldiers who fought at war made us have days like the ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) day where we remember them.
