Beginning of World War II
Hitler starts violating the treaty of Versailles. He raises an army of 500,000; and a navy well above the maximum, when the treaty limits it to 100,000, by 1935. He also remilitarizes the German airforce, which Germany wasn't allowed to have. Hitler invades Poland from the West on the 1st of September. Two days later, France and Britain declared war on Germany -
Battle of Britain
It was one of the most famous World War II battles. Hitler begins the Battle of Britain with the command "The German Air Force is to overcome the British Air Force with all means at its disposal, and as soon as possible." Throughout the battle, thousands of aircraft were sent to attack cities around Britain. On September 7th, 300 bombers escorted by 600 fighters attacked London. Britain's airforce had been outnumbered, but it still had many great advantages. -
Attack on Pearl Harbor
Before 8 AM, Japan launched a suprise attack on the United States, sending hundreds of Japanese fighters to the American naval base. After the attack, Franklin D. Roosevelt declared war on Japan. All of Congress, but one person, approved of it. America had finally joined the war after years of tension with Japan. -
The Battle of Midway
It was one of the most decisive battles of World War II. Japan planned on destroying the few aircraft carriers the US had left after Pearl Harbor, but they found out before they struck and were able to counter the attack. It effectively destroyed Japan's naval military strength, destroying four of it's aircraft carriers. It was placed on defensive from the devestating batle. -
The Battle of Stalingrad
The Nazi army attacks and bombs the city of Stalingrad, named after their leader, Stalin. It was one of the bloodiest battles in history. It lasted until February 2nd, 1943. The Soviets were sucessful in their defense of the city. -
The Battle of Normandy
The Battle of Normandy, also known as D-Day, resulted in most of the liberation of any Nazi controlled areas. It came when about 156,000 American, British, and Canadian troops invaded the coast of Normandy. It was one of the largest amphibious military assaults in history. -
Victory in Europe
Victory in Europe was marked after the Battle of Berlin.It was also very important to the war. It was achieved through the Red Army's forces. Russia greatly outnumbered Russia with about 2,500,000 soldiers, 41,600 artillery, 6,250 tanks, and 7,500 aircraft. Germany had 1,000,000 soldiers, 10,400 artillery, 1,500 tanks, and 3,300 aircrafts. -
Atomic Bombs
On August 6, the United States dropped an atomic bomb named Little Boy over Nagasaki. On August 9, another atomic bomb was dropped over Hiroshima named Fat Man. -
End of World War II
Japan surrenders uncondionally to the United States, several months after the Nazi's surrender. This officially ended World War II.
