Beginning of the Great Depression
Investors trade 16,410,030 shares on the New York Stock Exchange in one day, Black Tuesday. Billions of dollars lost, thousands of investors wiped out, many call this day the beginning of the Great Depression. -
The Night of Broken Glass
This night marked an escalation of violence towards Jews. On this night, thousands of synagogues, Jewish homes, and businesses were destroyed, and many Jews were killed, while the German police and civilians stood by and watched. -
Germany overtakes Paris
France has been defeated by Nazi Germany, and the red, white, and black swastika flag is flying overhead in Paris. Germany is in power over France. -
Pearl Harbor
Hundreds of Japanese fighter planes bombarded and attacked and American naval base at Pearl Harbor, which is close to Honolulu, Hawaii. The destruction and casualties were devastating, and this event pushed the U.S. to declare war on the Axis Powers and join in the fighting of WWII. -
D-Day
More than 160,000 soldiers of the Allied Troops landed on a 50-mile stretch of French coastline to fight Nazi Germany at Normandy, France. More than 9,000 soldiers from the Allied Forces were killed, but their sacrifices made a huge difference. -
V-E Day
This was the day that the last of Nazi Germany surrendered to their rivals. V-E Day stands for Victory in Europe Day -
Bombing of Hiroshima
On this day a lone American bomber was sent to drop an atomic bomb on the country of Hiroshima, killing 80,000 people and injuring more than 10,000 others. -
Surrender of Japan
On this day, after the two bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan finally sued for peace. -
V-J Day
Victory in Japan. This was the official day that Japan surrendered to the Allied Forces, with ceremonies held in Tokyo Bay. -
Nuremberg Crimes Trials begins
On this day 24 former Nazi officials were tried, and by the end of it, one year later, half of them would be executed.
