Herschel Grynszpan received a postcard about his father being deported to poland. So he shot an emplyee of the German embassy in Paris. When German Leaders received word about this they launched an attack on the Jewish community. -
Invasion of Poland
It only took Germany three weeks to take control of all of Poland. Hitler took the western half of Poland for himself, because that part had a large population of Germans. -
Soviet Union invade E. Poland
The Soviet Union was to take the eastern half of Poland. Which include Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia which fell quickly. The only country that reststed was Finland. Stalin sent one million troops into Finland and beat them by only sheer numbers. -
France Surrenders
France built defense mchanisms against Germany and planned it out for where they had attacked from before. The Germans went around this through thick forest where you dont usually take troops and tanks. This was unexpected and while Germany attacked from the north, Italy attacked from the south. -
Battle of Britain
Germany started off by trying to eliminate the royal air force. Then they would land 250,000 troops on the shore. Britain resisted Germany until Germany finally gave up. -
Japanese alliance with Germany and Italy
Japan, Italy, and Germany signed the tripartite pact. They became known as the axis powers. -
Lend Lease Act
This said that the president could only lend or lease arms and other supplies to any country vital to the United States. The United states sent arms to Britain under protection of the US Navy. -
German Invasion of Soviet Union
When Germany attacked the Soviet Union wasnt ready. The Soviet union had the largest army called the red army but it was neither well trained or well equipped. They used the scorched earth tactic as they were pushed deeper and deeper into their own country. The harsh winter had helped the Soviet Union win. -
Atlantic Charter
Roosevelt and Churchill secretly met on a battleship off Newfoundland. They issued a joint declaration called the Atlantic Charter. It upheld trade amongst nations and the right of people to choose their own government. -
Pearl Harbor
The Japanese surprised the Americans sinking 18 ships. They killed 2400 and wounded 1000. -
Japanese Internment
After the attack on Pearl Harbor Americans made Japanese-Americans on the west coast leave their homes. They relocated them to camps due to what happened with Japan. -
Battle of Midway
Americans decoded a message from by the Japanese saying they were attacking the island of midway. They assembled 150 ships, but the Americans were ready and attacked. -
Allied invasion of Italy
Roosevelt and Churchill met in Morracco and decided that they would first attack Italy. They landed on sicily and took the island. The conquest took Mussolini out of power. Italy surrendered but Germany seized northern italy and put Mussolini back in charge. -
D-Day
Allied attacked in Normandy. It was a sea to land attack. Allied forces stormed the beaches and Germans hid behind three feet thick concrete walls. -
German Surrender
The Soviet Union surrounded Berlin hitting the city with artilery. As the city crumbled Hitler married his long-time companion. He also blamed Jews for starting the war and for his Generals for losing it. After taking poison he shot himself then his body was burned. -
Bombing of Hiroshima
President Truman sent a message to the Japanese saying that if they didnt surrender they would bomb them. The japanese didnt reply so they bombed Nagaski. -
Bombing of Nagaski
This was the second attack. It killed 37500 people and the radiation killed more. -
Japanese Surrender
The Japnese surrendered to General Douglas Mcarthur. They surrendered on the US battleship the Missouri in Tokyo Bay. -
Nuremberg Laws
When Nazi war criminals were put on trial in Nuremberg. Of the 22 defendants, 12 were sentenced to death.
