Hitler becomes Chancellor
Hitler seizing power over Germany was a major cause of WWII because Hitler was responsible for all of Germany actions during the war. He took over and fought many countries mercilessly. He betrayed and lied during the war. He started the holocaust and all out hate towards Jews. Hitler is held responsiblr for beginning WWII. -
Italy annexes Ethiopia
During the Second Italo-Ethipoian War, facist Italy invaded and conquered Ethiopia. -
Japan Invades China
Japan used the excuse of being fired at by Chinese troops to beging a full scale invasion of China. They used the captured Manchuria as a launching point. This event started the Japan-China War and initiated WWII in the Pacific. -
Munich Conference
This conference between Britain, Germany, France, and Italy allowed Germany to take parts of Czechslovakia. Britain and France thought giving into Hitler would achieve peace. Unfortunately, they were wrong as Germany disrespected the agreement and WWII started shortly afterwood. -
Germany enters Czechslovakia
Germany entered Czechslovakia in violation of the Munich Conference agreement. The countries present believed they had come to a peace agreement, but Germany broke the agreement. As the agreement said that Germany could take Sutenland, Czechslovakia did not have a line of defense and did not try to resist. This created tension but no immediate action from Britain and France. -
Non-Aggression Pact
Nazi and Soviet represntatives signed the non-aggression pact which guaranteed that the two countries would not attack each other. However, the pact was broken when Germany attacks the Soviet Union. -
Germany invades Poland, WWII begins
Germany went into Poland with tanks and troops while aircrafts bombed the city of Warsaw. Germany used a technique called blitzkrieg to successfully invade Poland. Great Britain and France quickly declared war on Germany beginning WWII. -
Germany invades Denmark and Norway
Germany attacks Norway and Denmark. Germany warships entered many norweigen ports. At the same time, they were taking Danish cities. They wanted to use Scandanavia for a route to Great Britain -
Rescue at Dunkirk
German troops pounded the allied powers in France until they were trapped at the city of Lille. Outnumbered and overwhelmed, the allies retreated to the beaches of Dunkirk. From May 26th to June 4th, Britain sent 850 boats across the English channel to rescue around 338,000 allied troops. -
Italy joins WWII
Mussolini and Italy declared war on France and Britain as they joined WWII with the axis powers. Italy had immediate aim of expanding colonies in North Africa by taking land from Britain and France. -
France falls
After the rescue of Dunkirk, Germany kept pushing France to its breaking point. By June 14th, Germany had taken Paris. France finally surrendered on June 22nd. -
Battle of Britain begins
The German airforce began bombing Britain. They destroyed air fields, factories, and eventually major cities like London. However, the British held out a resistance until May 1941 where Hitler called of the attack. -
Operation Barbarossa
Germany invaded the unprepared Soviet Union with tanks and aircraft. Germany easily captured Leningrad and waited for a surrender by starving all of its inhabitants. He bombed food storages but there was no surrender. Impatient, Hitler turned to Moscow. -
Germany attacks Moscow
Germany attempted to seize Moscow, but the Soviet Union counterattacked.Temperatures fell freezing the Germans, but Hitler ordered no retreat. The Germans held a line until 1943 losing 500,000 German lives. -
Japan bomb Pearl Harbor
Japan launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. They bombed the harbor destroying 19 boats and killing 2,300 americans. Prseident Roosevelt declared war on Japan and its allies leading the U.S. into WWII. -
Battle of Midway
This battle between the U.S, and Japan in the Pacific Ocean lasted from June 4th to June 7th. The Japanese were surprised when the U.S. destroyed hundreds of Japanese planes. This battle regained control over the Pacific Ocean for the U.S. -
Battle of Stalingrad begins
This battle was the successful defense of the Russian city of Stalingrad. It is considered to be one of the most bloody battles ever killing over 2 million people. -
North African Campaign
The axis powers surrender and end the North African Campaign. They surrenders to the allies in Tunisia. -
D-Day
D-Day was the largest land and sea battle ever and was fought at Normandy. The British, French, Canadien, and American troops against the Germans. After a deadly month of fighting on a 60 mile long beach, the americans troops got through the German defense and marched into Paris. -
Auschwitz Liberated
The holocaust death camp of Auschwitz was liberated freeing Jews that would have been killed. The Holocaust was responible for killing millions of Jews. People died from starvation, freezing, execution, gas chambers, beatings, suicide, and disease. It was significant when the place that treated humans like they were nothing was stopped. -
Battle of Iwo Jima
The USA attacked Iwo Jima as it could be used as important air force base. Despite taking heavy casulaties, the US was able to defeat the Japanese. -
Hitler Commits Suicide
Hitler, the man who started WWII, commited suicide knowing that his country would lose the war. He was responsible for the inhumane torture during the Holocaust. He indirectly caused the death of 50-75 million people world wide. The crazy and racist ruler is one of the most hated people in history. -
V-E Day, Allies win WWII
On this day, Germany surrenders throughout Europe. WWII came to end and troops and people everywhere celebrated. V-E Day stands for Victory in Europe Day. -
Atomic Bombs
The U.S. dropped two atomic bombs on Japan. The first was in Hiroshima and the second followed three days later in Nagasaki. -
Japan Surrenders
The U.S. avenged Pearl Harbor by dropping two bombs on Japan. Japan's navy and air forces were destroyed. The cities were devastated and the people were helpless. The whole country was in devastation so Japan gave in.
