  • Japanese invasion of Manchuria (Manchuko)

    Japanese invasion of Manchuria (Manchuko)
    The Japanese, motivated by the need for raw materials and a desire to take over Chinese territory, invaded the province of Manchuria. This occured in 1931 and 1937. relevance- Due to the United States placing an embargo on Japan to keep them from invading, Japan decided to try a new tactic, which led to the bombing of Pearl harbor.
  • Hitler made Chancellor of Germany

    Hitler made Chancellor of Germany
    This is when Adolf Hitler becomes Chancellor of Germany.Hitler within a year of his inauguration gets rid of decmocracy in Germany and creates and empire called the Third Reich, and essencially gets rid of all of his rivals and effectively banned any party other than the Nazi party. Relevance- Much of why Hitler was able to become Chancellor of Germay was because he had came at the right time.He came when Germany was in depression, and when many people were desperrate for a solution.
  • The Munich Pact

    The Munich Pact
    The Munich Pact is an agreement between Hitler and Neville Chamerlain from the UK.The agreement was if Hitler was given the Sudetenland, a portion of Czechoslovakia whose inhabitents were mostly German, he would try to take no more land. Relevance- This pact uses the strategy, or policy that became common when dealing with Hitler; appeasement.Although Hitler is given the land, it seems appeasement was not enough, and he would eventually invade poland as well in Sept. of 1939.
  • Kristallnacht

    Kristallnacht
    This is when mobs ransacked more than seven thousand Jewish shops and synagogues, 91 died, and 30,000 were sent to concentration camps. relevance- This is often seen as the beginning of the Holocaust in reguards to it being the first time that the Nazi security organizations specifically targeted jews to kill.
  • The Invasion of Poland

    The Invasion of Poland
    This is Where Germany invaded Poland and broke the Munich pact. Relevance- This is basically the start of WWII because after this, Great Britain, and France declare war on Germany because they see that Germany won't stop annexing territory.
  • Dunkirk

    Dunkirk
    Dunkirk- City in the northwest corner of France where the allied troops were trapped by the advancing Germany Army. Relevance- This is where ships ranging from warships to fishing boats crossed the English Channel to rescue the allied troops. This saved over 300,000 British and French troops and essecially the British army.Some historians say that had Hitler moved his troops faster, he might have been able to get the British to surrender.
  • Attack on Pearl Harbor

    Attack on Pearl Harbor
    This is the event where the Japanese naval air force made a surprise attack on the United States naval base; Pearl Harbor, destroying, or damaging several U.S. battleships. relevance- Pearl Harbor is the event that basically brought the United States into WWII.
  • Bataan Death March

    Bataan Death March
    After the Japanese landed in the Philippines in May 1942, nearly 75,000 American and Filipino prisoners were forced to endure a 60-mile forced march; during the ordeal, 10,000 prisoners died or were killed. relevance- This happened as a result of Pearl Harbor causing MacArthur to retreat leaving the soldiers in the Philippines.
  • Battle of Midway

    Battle of Midway
    The Battle of Midway lasted four days, which took place near the American outpost at Midway Island. During this battle, the U.S. was able to sink four Japanese aircraft carriers. relevance- This battle puts America on the offense, and Japan on the defence. In their offensive, the Americans develop the strategy of island hopping in the Pacific.
  • D-Day

    D-Day
    Operation led by Eisenhower, where over a million troops stormed the beaches at Normandy and began the process of re-taking France. relevance- D-Day was basically the beggining of the end for the Germans, especially since now the Germans were being attacked from both sides by the United States, and Russia.
  • Battle of the Bulge

    Battle of the Bulge
    Battle which occured from Dec. 16th 1944 to Jan. 25th 1945, in which Germany staged a massive counterattack in Belgium and Luxembourg which pushed a 30 mile "bulge" into the Allied lines.The Germans where eventually pushed back with heavy losses. relevane- This is basically the last real battle of WWII after D-Day and this leads to V E day.
  • Yalta Confrence

    Yalta Confrence
    This is a meeting of the allied powers at Yalta to decide final war plans, and to decide what to do with Germany after the war. relevance- This meeting decided the war would only end with and unconditional surrender of axis powers and that the previously conquered territories in Europe would hold democratic elections to decide how their government would be run. It also discussed the proposal for creation of the United Nations as a successor to the League of Nations.
  • V E Day

    V E Day
    This when the war is won in Europe. relevance- This is the end of the war in Europe.
  • The bombing of Hiroshima

    The bombing of Hiroshima
    This is when the atomic bomb was used by America on the Japanese at Hiroshima after the United States had warned Japan to surrender, or basically suffer the consequences. relevance- This helps bring about V J Day more quickly, as well as saves American lives. This also had other affects, especially when it came to Soviet Russia later on.
  • V J Day

    V J Day
    This is the day that the Japanese finally surrender to America on the U.S.S. Missouri in Tokyo Bay. relevance- This is the end of WWII all together, not only in the Pacific.
