    Richard Russell VideoAfter attending UGA and practicing law, he entered into the Georgia General Assembly at a young age. Russell was in the US Senate from 1933 until his death. He supported educational and financial boosts for Georgia, believing it would make for a stronger government. He was elected as Georgia's governor in 1931. Russell helped Georgia prepare for WWII. He set up 15 military bases in the state.

    The Holocaust was a mass murder of jews in Europe, under the leadership of Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. More than 6 million innocent jews died in the horrible concentration camps. Georgia had jewish leaders in the state like Jacob Rothschild. Because of the many jewish figures in the state, there was an impact in Georgia. Also, some holocaust survivors moved to Georgia after the war.

    German troops invaded Poland, which was the start of World War 2. The German forces bombed Poland airforce fields and attacked the Poland navy. They claimed it was an act of defense, but France and England didn't believe them. Both counries declared war on Germany on September 3.

    Brunswick was a port near Savannah, mainly used for trade, but when the war came, they began building cargo ships. These ships shipped resources to help out the Allied Forces in Europe. They were called Liberty Ships and the Brunswick port built 85 of them in only 5 years. J.A. Jones Construcion was in charge of the creation of Liberty Ships in Brunswick.

    Savannah was another port where Liberty Ships were created. Originally the goal was to have 36 ships built, but the workers effort paid off in making about 88 ships. Many of the employeees here were women or African Americans, because white men were off fighting the war.

    America provided aid to the Allies during the war, even though they were not in the confict at first. This is because they didn't want Germany or Japan to win the war. The aid included repairing ships at American ports, giving training for British soldiers in America, and shipping weapons to the Allies. Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed this act on March 11, 1941.

    Japan military forces snuck a surprise attack on America's navy when they bombed Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. This was part of the Japenesse's plan to cripple the American naval force, so that they could continue to takeover land and make it harder for the US to fight back. 2,300 Americans were killed that day, and many ships and planes were destroyed.

    Marietta was a small cotton dependent town in Georgia before World War 2, but when it started they began manufacturing airplanes. The airplanes were manufactured in a company called the Bell Aircraft.They produced the b-29 bomber which was the best war plane you could get.This gave many jobs to civiians and by the end of the war, they had created 668 bombers.

    Battle of Stalingrad VideoThe Battle of Stalingrad started when the Germans bombed the Soviet city, Stalingrad. The Germans fought their way in, trying to capture the city, but the Soviet soldiers successfully kept control over the city, and the Germans surrendered on February 2nd. Even though this was a major victory for the Allied Powers, there were about 2 million lives lost
  • D-Day

    D-Day
    D-Day VideoD-Day is another name for the Invasion of Normandy. This is when an enormous amount of British, French, and American soldiers attacked German forces in Normandy, France. 6,000 Allies ships with soldiers and supplies invaded the area. Americans fought for the Omaha and Utah beaches, where many lost their lives, but they did capture the islands, pushing Germany out of France. This was a turning point.

    This was when the British Prime Mininster, Winston Churchill, the Soviet Union leader, Joseph Stalin, and the American president, Franklin Roosevelt, met up when the war was coming to an end. They disscusseed forcing Germany to surrender and what would happen after that. Germany would be split in differenrt sections to be run by them and France. The Soviets taking over most of Germany led to the cold war.

    Hitler remained in an underground bunker towards the end of the war, fearing that he would be captured by the Allied Powers. Hitler married Eva Braun on April 29th, 1945, one day before their joint suicide. On April 30th in the underground bunker, Hitler shot himself, while Eva drank poison. Their bodies were burned in the garden outside of the bunker.

    Hiroshima Bombing VideoOn this day, an American b-29 bomber, Enola Gay, flew over the city of Hiroshima, Japan, and dropped the first atomic bomb ever used in war. America did this, because they wanted to end the war as soon as possible. The bomb destroyed the city and killed 80,000 people immediatley. Thousands more died later on from side effects like radiation poisoning.

    Just 3 days after bombing Hiroshima, Japan, the US finishes the war for good by dropping a second bomb over Nagasaki, Japan. Once again, this left the city in ruins with 74,000 dead. The bomb, nicknamed Fat Man, was carried by the plane Bockscar. Japan surrendered 6 days after this.

    The United Nations originally came up in 1942, where 26 countries promised to fight together against the Central powers in WWII. Later on october 24th, 1945, 50 country representatives met up in San Fransisco and formed the United Nations Charter. Some of the countries included were China, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The charter was finally approved by all 50 countries on June 26th, 1945.

    Vinson was an advocate for the US Navy in Congress. He was also called the "father of the two ocean navy," because he argued with congress for what was to benefit the armed forces, like an increased budget. Vinson led the House Naval Affairs Committee and the House Armed Services Committee, to strive for a strong defese that can protect our country, especially during the war.
