WWII Begins with the invasion of Poland
Germany invaded Poland and the world saw how Hitler would wage war. “Blitzkrieg” strategy: bombing to destroy enemy’s air ability, railroads, communication, and munitions dumps. Followed by huge land invasion with troops, tanks, and artillery. Poland tried to fight back but was no match for Germany. They had no help from Soviets due to Non-Aggression Pact. -
Rape of Nanking
Nanking, China fell to Japanese forces. Japanese General Matsui Iwane ordered Nanking destroyed. City was burned, 150,000 male “war prisoners” were butchered, 50,000 male civilians massacred, at least 20,000 women and girls were raped, mutilated and killed. Matsui found guilty of war crimes after WWII and was executed. -
Lend Lease Act
The Lend Lease Act was the US giving military aid to the allies during WWII. The US gave military materials to mainly Britain because they were the only force in Europe fighting Germany. -
France surrendered to Germany
Marshal Henri Petain, as prime minister, arranged an armistice with the Nazis against the advice of French General Charles de Gaulle. Armistice went into effect June 25, 1940. Petain soon collaborated with the Nazis. The French were then out of WWII leaving Britain alone against Germany. -
Battle of Britain
Churchill announced “The Battle of France is over. I expect the Battle of Britain is about to begin.” Britain's air defense system, fighter pilots, and great military leader in Air Marshal Hugh Dowding. Germany had major problems. Bad intelligence and British attacks on Berlin led to attacks on London, second attack failed. Hitler suspended the Battle of Britain, September 15, 1940. -
Pearl Harbor Attack
The attack on pearl harbor was the first time america had been directly attacked. The Japanese hit pearl harbor with hundreds of planes that bombed our navel fleet. They were able to sink 20 of our ships in the end. -

was a research and development project that produced the first atomic bombs during World War I. It took 4 years after being approved by FDR and finished in 1946. The project was under the direction of Major General Leslie Groves of the US Army Corps of Engineers. -
Battle of Midway
This battle was in response 6 days after Pearl Harbor. Americans defeated a fleet of Japanese troops in response to Pearl Harbor. This marked the first battle of many to come. -

The Battle of Stalingrad was the bloodiest battle in Russia's history with 2 million dead. The fight was to keep Germany out of Russia and the Russians were successful. -

This was a reaction to the allies landing in the Philippines. Widely considered the largest battle of World War II. Some consider this the largest naval battle in all of history. -

This was Germany's last offensive against the allied forces. They blitzed the allies and tried split their forces in two. In the end the allies beat the Germans. -

During World War II where the United States Marine Corpse landed. They eventually captured the islands of Iwo Jima from Japan. This was fused by battles before this. -

Battle of Okinawa. On April 1, 1945, Allied forces invade the island of Okinawa and engage the Japanese in the bloodiest battle of the Pacific War. -

Victory over Japan Day is the day on which the Empire of Japan surrendered in World War II. This day symbolizes the day the war officially ended. The term has also been used for September 2, 1945, when Japan’s formal surrender took place aboard the U.S.S. Missouri. -
Nuremburg Trials
Nazi leaders were arrested and also put on trial for crimes against humanity. Of the 24 defendants, 12 of them received death sentences. They claimed that they were just following orders.
