    Mao Zedong Heads Long March
    Jiang made an army that surrounded the communists(Mao Zedong) in the mountains. The Communists thought that they were about to lose. 100,000 Communist forces fled and started the Long March, which was a 6,000 mile march. Many communists died from lack of food and cold. Then, Mao and 8,000 Communist survivors moved into caves in northwest china. More people followed them, but then Japan invaded China because the tension between the nationalists and communists increased.

    Germany Invades Poland; France and Great Britain declare war on Germany
    After Hitler signed the non-aggression pact, he invaded Poland. He launched a surprise attack which occurred on September 1, 1939. Germany started marching into the Polish border and Germany's aircrafts bombed in Warsaw. The Germans used their new military strategy against the Polish called the Blitzkreig (lightning war), which used fast airplanes and tanks, with forces to attack the enemies.France and Britain declared war on Germany on September 3. Hitler annexed the western half of Poland.

    Japan Attacks Pearl Harbor
    The American Sailors at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii were caught by surprise on the morning of December 7, 1941 when they were attacked by the Japanese. The US military leaders knew that an attack might be coming, but didn't know where it would take place. The Japanese sunk or damaged 19 ships in Pearl Harbor. 2,300 Americans were killed and 1,100 were wounded. After the attack President Roosevelt said that December 7, 1941 was "a date which will live in infamy." Congress declared war on Japan.

    In March 1945, the Allies traveled across the Rhine River into Germany. 3 million allies marched into Berlin from the south west. 6 million Soviets came from the east. On April 25, 1945 the Soviets surrounded the German Capital and bombed.Hitler hid in the underground headquaters below the German City, which was being destroyed. Hitler married Eva Braunt on April 29. The next day, they commited suicide. On May 7, 1945 Eisenhower accepted the surrender of the Third Reich from the German Military.

  • Allies use atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki

    Allies use atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki
    Truman had to decide whether he wanted to use an A- bomb or an atomic bomb. The bomb was made by the Manhattan Project. When he became president, the bomb started to be used. On July 16, 1945 the first atomic bomb was set off. Truman warned the Japanese that they should surrender because a bomb would be coming. The Japanese didn't listen, and on August 6, the US dropped a bomb on Hiroshima 70,000-80,000 people died and three days later another bomb was set off on Nagasaki. 70,000 people died.
