WWII Begins
It all began with Hitlers attack on Poland, and because Britian and Frace had defense treaties with Poland they declared war on Germany a couple days later. US and the Soviet Union were then drawn into the war in 1941. -
Pearl Harbor
It was when the Japanes surprise attacked America, and that was a date that no one will forget. The Japanaese killed 2500 people, 8 battleships, 3 destroyers, 3 lightcruisers, 160 aircrafts destroyed, and 128 more damaged. Everything that the Japanese wanted to do to the Amreicans was succesfully done. The day after Roosevelt entered the war, and the americans were ready for revenge. -
Atom Bomb
Between the 1930's and 1945 the americans were working on the Atom Bomb. The project was called the Mahataan Project, and it was actually held in Tennessee. FDR knew that we needed something to overpower all of the superpowers, and he knew this would be it, this would have been there perfect threat. They dropped the bomb on August 6th 1945 on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. -
Woman Play a Roll
This is when woman started to play a roll in American society. SInce the guys were off at war woman had to take man's job, and step up. They had to work in factories, and really come out of there old tradition were they were used to staying home the whole time. Rosie the Riveter was a key example on what the american woman had to become, and it also gave the people an idol on who to look up too. This is what changed the work force of woman, and is why they work full time today. -
Battle of MIdway
This was the turning point of the war on the pacific, which ended Japanese's advance of world domination. This was not exactly a naval battle but my of an air cmbat battle. Even though the they lost the battle they still had a powerful army. They would never again attack Hawaii, and have forever been put on the defensive side of the war. -
Stalingrad
The battle of Stalingrad started on June 1941 and ended in January 31, 1943. Germans made a huge advance into Soviet territory but couldn't handle the harsh weathers. They kept fighting until they couldn't take it anymore. Soviet Union then started to gain back there ground and finally defeated Germany. The battle was the true turning point of the war in Europe. -
D-Day
This is when the Allies hit Germany in force. There were more than 11000 planes ready for battle, and troops landed at 6:30 on the beach. The real beachs to win was Omaha and Iwo Jima, the Germsans were very heavily armed and many troops lost there life. If peopel could descibe what D-Day was, they would say it was the longest day ever, but Americans did it and conqured the beach. -
Yalta Conference
This was the conference when Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stolin meet in Yalta on the Black Sea. They were also known as the Big Three because they were some of the most important/powerful people in the world after the war. Here is where they agreed that Poland, Bulgaria, and Romania would hold free elections. The problem was that Stalin wasn't always on board which created problems down the road. -
FDR's Death
When FDR died there was a littile bit of panic in America becasue he was the guy who made so much happen and everyone just got used to him leading the country. Truman then had to step in and fill some big shoes. Truman was immediatley appointed in to office, it happened so fast that he didn't realize it until a few hours after. Truman did well in office since it was such a big task for him to take on, ecspecially since he didnt even want to be president. -
Nuremberg Trials
These trials really excited but also upsseted the Americans, becuase it was when they actually got to get pay back from the Nazi's. They really got to give them what they deserve and inform them on what they did to there families and there country. They didnt get to persecute some of the Nazi'd becaue they commited sucide, but the ones they did catch were tried and conviced for what they did with no relief.
