  • Britain Declares War on Germany

    Britain Declares War on Germany
    After such a long time of simply letting Germany do as they please, Great Britain finally put their foot down. At eleven A.M. September 3rd, Britain decalred war on Germany in response to the attack on Poland just days earlier. Just hours later France followed Britain into the war and also declared war on Germany. The United States decieded too remain neutral.
  • Italy Joins the War

    Italy Joins the War
    June 10th, Italian leader Benito Mussolini declares war on Britain and France. Soon thereafter Germany invades France.Soon Paris falls and France signs a armistice with Germany and Italy.
  • Battle of Britain Begins

    Battle of Britain Begins
    Germany attacks Britain and starts the Battle of Britain. daytime air raids started in late 1940.The first all night air raid in Britain begins soon after. These were called the "Blitz."
  • FDR Remains in Office

    FDR Remains in Office
    Franklin D. Roosevelt is elected for the third time.FDR was and is the only president ever to serve for three terms (and later to be four terms.) Many Americans were scared because the war and the Depression and so they were scared of change during this vulerable time, which can also be said for Roosevelt's four term.
  • Germany Breaks Agreement

    Germany Breaks Agreement
    Germant broke their agreement with the Soviet Union and attacks on June 22nd. Codename "Barbarossa." This was the largest German military operation in World War Two. This attack came six months after the Soviet union renewed it's pact with Germany.
  • Japan Attacks

    Japan Attacks
    Japanese airmen bomb American naval base Pearl on O'hau, Hawaii. The American's were not prepared and 350 aircraft were destroyed/damaged, 8 battleships of the U.S. Pacific Fleet were sunk/badly damaged yet all of America's aircraft carriers remained unscathed. December 8th, the United States declare war on Japan and Britain soon follows. DEcember 11th Germany and Italy declare war on The United States.

    Battle of Midway
    Battles in Pacifc progress after Pearl Harbor. United States use "island hopping" tatic against Japan to get closer to the Japanese islands. The Battle of Midway flips the war in the Pacific. Japan started to fight a defensive war instead, but did not lose their strong will against the United States.
  • Capture of Italy Begins

    Capture of Italy Begins
    On July 9th through the 10th, Allies forces land in Sicily and the invasion of Italy begin. Soon Sicily is captured and the Allies move into Italy. On July 25th and 26th Mussolini is arrested and the Italian Fascist government falls. Marshal Pietro Badoglio takes over and negotiates with Allies. September 8, 1943 Italian surrender to Allies is offical. October 13th, Italy declares war on Germany.
  • Germans Surrender

    Germans Surrender
    May 7th, Germany signed an unconditional surrender at Allied headquaters in France, to the Western Allies. May 9th, Germany surrenders to Russia, ending the World War in Europe.
  • Atom Bombs Dropped

    Atom Bombs Dropped
    In order to end the war in the Pacific and preserve American lives, President Truman made the decision to drop the atomic bomb codenamed "Little Boy" on Hiroshima on August 6th. Three days later "Fat Man" was dropped on Nagasaki, both bombs causing an estimated 225,000 fatalities. Six days after the bombing of Nagasaki, Japan announced its surrender to the Allies, signing the Instrument of Surrender on 2 September, officially ending WWII.
