Aircraft
The Wright brothers first began studying birds fly and wanted to make this come true. In 1905 the first practical airplane was created by the Wright brother. The invention of the airplane led to many different models being created after that. The B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay was the aircraft used during WW2. In fact that airplane was used by the U.S. for the bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. The B-29 was the world’s first nuclear-capable aircraft. -
Submarine: U-Boat
The first U-Boat was invented in 1906 by William Bourne. U-boats were used in WW2 by the Germans. They were especially used during the Battle of the Atlantic. They used submarines because they were efficent because nobody could see them when they attacked people. -
Sonar
The Sonar was invented in 1906 by Lewis Nixon. He invented the sonar-type listening device for detecing icebergs. The sonar was used in Submarines so they could detect things coming in their ways, esp icebergs. Many different countries used this device like Japan, Germany, Great Britain, etc. -
Nuclear Weapons.
In 1919 Ernest Rutherford the first to split an atom, though it was nitrogen, and thus there was no power generation or explosion. This then got generated into nuclear reaction by the fission of an atom. H.G. Wells was the first one to envision a nuclear bomb. With the help of these ideas the U.S. used this knowledge to create the first atomic bomb used during WWII. -
Mussolini in power
As Italy was going downhill after the WW1 many citizens just wanted Italy restored to its normal ways. Mussolini came to power after the "March on Rome" in 1922. King Victor Emmanuel invited Mussolini to form a government. In June 1921 Giovanni Giolitti was forced to resign due to Fascist opposition, the King gave Mussolini dictatorial powers. Mussolini took this to his advantage and seized control of Italy. Italy was going through tough times economically, socially and politically. -
Rocket Engines
In 1926, Robert Goddard invented the worlds first rocket. Robert Goddard tested the first liquid-propellant rocket engine. His engine used gasoline and liquid oxygen. During World War II, there were a number of rocket- powered aircraft built to explore high speed flight. The X-1A, used to break the "sound barrier", and the X-15 were rocket-powered airplanes. V1 and V2 were rockets fired from planes at trains. -
Stalin in power
When the Bolsheviks sized power, Lenin became the leader of the Bolsheviks. Since that happened Stalin was promoted to General Secretary of the Party. After Lenin died Stalin eventually came to power. He eliminated the rest of his rivals. Eventually, Stalin had every individual who could challenge his authority killed or jailed, leaving him in sole control of the USSR. He created the five-year plans for Russia to catch up with the modernized, industrialized world powers of the time. -
Hitler in power
Hitler came into power on Jan 30, 1933. During the economic collapse of the 1930's people needed hope. As the economic crisis worsened more and more power was centralized, eventually the German's went along with making Hilter a dictator so he could get things dones. The Nazi's and Hilter were elected to provide the people of Germany with change they could believe in. Hitler promised to rebuild the nation and seek revenge against the Allies. This made him and the Nazis wildly popular in Germany. -
Radar
Radar was invented by Sir Robert Watson Watt in 1935. It was used as a part of England's defensive strategy against sea and air attacks. They began to do this in WWII. The invention of radar went a long way in helping the British succeed in the WW2. -
The beginning of the Nuremberg Laws
The Nuremberg Laws were laws which excluded the Jews from German life, as well as took away some of their natural rights. The Nuremberg Laws define a "Jew" as someone with three or four Jewish grandparents. It was introduced at the annual Nuremberg Rally of the Nazi Party. It deprived Jews of citizenship and prohibited any non-Jewish German from marrying a Jew. The laws issued on September 15, 1935, approved by Hitler personally. -
Computer
The Z1 computer was developed by Conrad Zuse a German engineer, the first freely programmable computer. During the WWII he was set as the inventor of computers to make his calculation work much easier. He then invented the Z1 Computer that would be an automatic calculator that would calculate 3 basic elements like memory, control and calculator. -
Kristallnacht
The name refers to the wave of violent anti-Jewish pogroms which took place on November 9 and 10, 1938. It happened throughout hroughout Germany, annexed Austria, and in areas of the Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia. The Nazi troopers had destroyed 7,000 Jewish businesses, set fire to more than 900 synagogues, killed 91 Jews and deported some 30,000 Jewish men to concentration camps. -
Total War
Total war was when everyone entered the world in the year of 1939. Germany went to go invade poland and that was the offical start of WWII. Great Britian, Germany, Italy, and Japan were all in war against each other. On the other hand the United States was not entered yet. The World was in total chaos, fighting had begun everywhere. They were not happy with each other. -
The St. Louis
The St. Louis was a German ocean liner most notable for a single voyage in 1939. It would take Jewish refugees from Germany to Cuba. When the St. Louis arrived in Havana on May 27 only 22 Jewish refugees were allowed entry. They were also refused entry into the United States. -
Hitler invades Poland, beginning of WWII
Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union signed a non-aggression treaty. One week later, Germany invaded Poland and World War II began. The first attack of the war took place on September 1, 1939, as German aircraft bombarded the Polish town of Wielun. Then five minutes later they made an other attack. Within days, the United Kingdom and France declared war on Germany -
Tripartite Act
he Tripartitite Pact was a treaty signed in Berlin, Germany on September 27th, 1940. It was signed by Imperial Japan, Nazi Germany, and Fascist Italy, forming the Axis Powers of World War II. It was an anti American alliance, stating that each country would help any of the others that was attacked by the USA. These powers were opposed by the Allied Powers, including the United States, China and Great Britiain. -
Lend Lease Act
The Lend-Lease Act was passed on March 11, 1941. Lend-Lease was a program of the United States Federal government during World War II. It enabled the United States to provide the Allied nations with war material while the US was still officially a neutral country. FDR came up with this act when Churchill asking for aid from FDR when economic status of England and their inability to pay for and transport material were low. -
Beginning of Final Solution
The Final Solution was the Nazi genocide of the Jews in 1941-1945. The mass murder of the Jews began with the German invasion of the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941. Hitler believed his race was pure, which was the Aryan race. He wanted to protect his racial purity and thought about getting rid of all Jews throughout Europe. He came up with this plan to get rid of the so called "problem". -
Hideki Tojo: Japan prime minister
Tojo was appointed Minister of war by Fuminaro Kondoye. Then on October 16th, 1941, Tojo was appointed to Prime minister by the emperor. Tojo authorised the attack on Pearl Harbour in December 1941. As the Americans advanced throughout the many islands in the Pacific, Japan came into range of American bombers. Since these bombs destroyed much of Japan the emperor, Hirohito, believed that Tojo had lost control of events and Tojo offered his resignation on July 9th, 1944. -
The attack on Pearl Harbor
On the morning of Dec 7 there was an suprise attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor by Japan. The bombing destroy much of the base as well as killing many soldiers. This attack outraged many Americans and then the following day U.S. declared war on Japan. -
Japanese internment camps
The Japanese internement was a concerntration camp for the Japanese americans. They made these concentration camps because of the attack on Pearl Harbor. -
D-Day
D-Day is the battle of Normandy. It resulted in Allies helped free Western Europe from Nazi Germany's control. American, British and Canadian forces landed on five beaches of coast of France’s Normandy region. It lasted from June 1944 to August 1944. By late 1944 most of northern France had been freed. -
Liberation of the Death Camps
The Allied troops entered Nazi-occupied territories and came upon nazi concentration cmaps. They were very shocked at what they saw looking at large ditches filled with bodies, gas chambers, etc. These allied troops helped free the Jews living in these concentration camps. General Eisenhower wanted to film and document this so this would not occur in future generations. -
Death of President Roosevelt
FDR passed away after serving terms in office. It was around 1 p.m. and President FDR stated that he has major pain in the back of his head. After that he collasped unconscious. Doctors came help to retrieve him but he was pronounced dead. He lefted Vice President Truman in charge while the country was fighting WWII. -
Truman becomes President
After President FDR died truman was iimmediately put into office. He still had to give the oath of office. He followed Roosevelt's war plans, and 25 days later, the Germans surrendered. He became president during WWII. He give the order to drop the Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945, he believed he saved American lives. On August 14, 1945, the Japanese surrendered. -
Death of Adolf Hitler
Adolf Hitler got killed on 1945 at Reich Chancery in Berlin. Two days before his death Hitler married this women named Eva Braun. On April 29, Hitler recieved news from Field Marshall Keitel that Belin would not recieve anymore troops and that the city would be lost to Russia. He also recieved info that Mussolini was dead along with his mistress. Then he on April 30 he gave Otto Gunsche that his body be burned with is wife. He commited sucide with her. He had appointed Grand Admiral Doenit. -
V-E Day
V-E means Victory in Europe and it occured on May 8, 1945. It was offically announced at the end of WWII. German General Jodl signed the unconditional surrender document that formally ended war in Europe. Winston Churchill got the message, although it was not publically anncounced. People began to know that the war ended and celebrated with bonfires. -
Atomic Bomb on Nagasaki and Hiroshima
On Aug 6, 1945 the United States used a massive bomb atomic bomb on the two cities in Japan. This event killed many people and left those cities all ruined at flattened. At 2:45 a.m. on Monday a B-29 bomber the Enola Gay, took off from Tinian, a North Pacific island in the Marianas. The first choice target, Hiroshima, was having clear weather. At 8:15 a.m. (local time), the Enola Gay's door sprang open and dropped the bomb. Then 3 days later one was dropped on Nagasaki. -
Japan surrenders
Japan surrendered on Sept 2, 1945. The Japanese representatives signed the official Instrument of Surrender, prepared by the War Department and approved by President Truman. Japan's navy and airforce was complety destroyed which meant they couldn't do much. The Allied naval blockade of Japan and intensive bombing of Japanese cities had left the country and its economy devastated.
