    In May of 1940 Germany invaded France from the west and quickly defeated the French army. In June France surrenders by signing an armistice with Germany.

    Germany bombs London in September of 1940, the Luftwaffe unleashed bombings on London and Britain's major cities. Some of the bombs didn't land where they were supposed to and instead landed on residential areas which killed over 400 civilians.

    Just before 8 a.m. on that Sunday morning, hundreds of Japanese fighter planes destroyed or damage nearly 20 American naval vessels, including eight enormous battleships, and over 300 airplanes. More than 2,400 Americans died in the attack, including civilians, and another 1,000 people were wounded.

    On D-Day 156,000 American, British and Canadian forces landed on five beaches along the coast of Normandy. The invasion was one of the largest amphibious military assaults in history and required extensive planning.

    President Truman was warned that attempt to invade Japan would result in horrific American casualties so he ordered that the new weapon be used to bring the war to a speedy end. On August 6, 1945, America dropped a five-ton bomb over the Japanese city of Hiroshima.
