    Battle of the Atlantic (British victory)

    (Europe-Naval) This was the longest battle in the war. It was the blockade by Britian against Germany. This kept import lanes open, which allowed Britian to keep fighting.
  • Battle of Dunkirk (Draw)

    (Land) All of the British soldiers were saved from the Germans at Dunkirk. The British pulled west, and the Germans tried to get the British army to surrender. The Germans fired heavy artillery at the British, sustaning over 1,000 civillian casualties. It saved many of the British soldiers which then made up most of the D-Day army later during the war.

    (Air) The battle of Britian occurred during the summer and autumn of 1940. It was an air battle to weaken the British moral and army. The Germans bombed major cities and military bases in Britian for months. It ended up boosting British support and moral.
  • Battle of El Alemein (British victory)

    (Land) The battle of El Alemein occurred in North Africa and Egypt. It was a tactical stalemate, however it was a strategic win for the Allies. It was a land and air battle over North Africa. The second battle of el Alemein was a victory for the Allies, and the Germans retreated to El Agheila. This allowed the Allies to gain an African hold and pushed back the Germans.

    (Land) The battle at Stalingrad was considered a turning point for the war. The Allies surrounded the German 6th army and destroyed them, while the remaining members surrendered. This made Germany retreat and allowed Russia a new foothold to push the Germans out of their contry and into Germany.
  • Operation Torch (Allied victory)

    (Land) Operation Torch was an invasion of North Africa to eliminate the Axis powers stationed there. It cleared out another area allowing the Allies to gain more footholds in Africa.
  • Invasion of Palermo (Allied victory)

    (Land/Air) The invasion of Palerno drove the Axis forces out of Italy, and helped oust Mussolini from power. It also launched the Italian campaign which resulted in the Allies also claiming Sicily.
  • Monte Cassino (Allied victory)

    (Land) The Allies bombed a religious abbey, which was later occupied by the Germans. They were then driven out, but at a high cost for the Allies. This battle is known as the Gateway to Rome. This opened up a pathway into the capital of Italy.
  • Invasion of Normandy (Allied victory)

    (Land) This was an invasion into the German-occupied West-Europe. This battle is refered to as D-Day It forced the Germans to retreat and gave the allies their first foothold on West Europe since it was conquered.
  • Battle of the Bulge (Allied victory)

    (Land) Although the Battle of the Bulge sounds like the name for a competitive weight-loss program, it was actually a major battle for WWII. This battle occurred when the Germans planned a surprised attack on the Allied line by emerging from the Ardennes forrest. The line was later reinforced with more troops to push back the Germans. This was the costlyest battle for United States troops but also depketed Germany's war making materials.

    (Air) The bombings of Dresden occured between February 13 and 15 in 1945. It was an Allied victory, with US and British planes destroying much of the city of Dresden. The city was also bombed on March 2 and April 17. Badly damaged the capital of the German state Saxon which made the city easier to conquer.
