  • Selective Service Act is passed

    This act provided the United States president authority to draft soldiers. Woodrow Wilson first brought up this topic on April 2nd, when he pushed the government to adopt this conscription and eventually passed through both houses and Wilson then signed into a law.
  • Hitler is named leader of Nazi Party

    July 29th was the first time Hitler had officially been named Fuhrer of the Nazi Party. The party was originally named the German Workers Party and focused on their beliefs toward German pride and antisemitism. As Hitler became leader he changed the name to the Nazi Party and showed his strong beliefs against the Treaty of Versailles and how it was unfair to Germany. He later became chancellor of Germany in 1933 along side his Nazi party and the dictatorial powers that came along with them.
  • Kellogg-Briand Pact signed

    This pact was signed in Paris by the United States, France, and Germany in hopes to prevent another World War. Yet this pact was signed it did little to help stop the rise of militarism or World War II.

    Japan Invades Manchuria

    In 1931, the Japanese Kwangtung Army attacked Chinese troops in Manchuria. This event, also known as the Manchurian Incident, was enacted in order for Japan to be able to take over the province and in the greater span of things to take over East Asia as time went on. Some blame the league of nations for this incident as they did nothing to stop it and this event would be a further cause of World War II.

    Enabling Act of 1933

    The formal title was 'Law to Remedy the Distress of People and Reich'. This act let Hitler enact laws including ones violating the Weimar Constitution and conduct them without approval of parliament or Reich President von Hindenburg. This act influenced the rise of Hitler's dictatorship.
  • Neutrality Act of 1935 signed

    This act allowed Congress to put an embargo on arm sales to belligerents, forbid American ships to enter war zones, prohibited those ships to be armed, and barred Americans from traveling on belligerent ships. Roosevelt was hesitant of this act, as he believed we could only stay neutral for so long in the war.
  • FDR wins third term

    In July, Roosevelt was elected for a third term at the Democratic Party convention in Chicago. There was mixed feelings in the country about him running again as the unspoken rule for presidents is a two term limit. None of the less by November he would be assured to continue running the country for a third time. Later FDR ended up having a four term presidency before he left the office for good.
  • Philip Randolph's March/Roosevelt response

    Randolph was an activist in the civil rights movement, zoning in labor as his main focus. In 1941 he organized a movement focus on rights for black workers. This march persuaded Roosevelt to issue an executive order (8802) banning discrimination in defense industries.
  • Lend-Lease Program enabled

    This act passed by FDR was meant for providing US military aid to foreign nations during the war. Some of these countries included Britain, Soviet Union, China, and Brazil. Although the US was trying to stay neutral, this act took them one step closer to entering WWII.
  • Japanese attack Pearl Harbor

    At a US naval base in Honolulu, Hawaii, hundreds of Japanese fighter planes attacked the base just before 8 am on December 7th. This attack destroyed 20 American vessels (8 battleships), over 300 airplanes. As well as killed over 2,400 Americans and 1,000 were wounded. The day after the attack is when President Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan. The US would finally enter WWII.
  • Hitler declares war against US

    Prior to Pearl Harbor, Germany made an oral agreement with the Japan to join a war against the US. Hitler believed that if he did not declare war on America, we would soon do it. At this point the US had been attacking German U-boats and shaming the Nazi ideology. They also believed that once Japan beat the US, they would turn around and help Germany defeat Russia. At 3:30 on December 11th, the German charge d'affaires handed American Secretary of State a copy of declaration of war.
