They did well in there efforts to take out Britain's air defense but made a poor judgement and decided to turn there efforts to London when they thought they had damaged Britain's air defenses enough. This gave Britain time to recover and drive Germany out. -
Germany's invasion of Soviet Union and Battle of Stalingrad
Germany attacked the Soviet Union and took out most of their air force in their first attacks. Germany was pushing their way through most of the Soviet Union with relative ease, despite this the Soviet Union persevered and at the Battle of Stalingrad they won and slowly forced Germany out of the Country. This battle was one of the largest in WWII, about 850,000 axis casualties were recorded and over 1 million Soviet casualties were recorded. -
Japan Bombing of Pearl Harbor
Japanese fighter planes attacked an american naval base in Hawaii destroying around 20 ships and 300 planes. There were also around 3,000 casualties in this attack. This brought America into WWII. -
Battle of Bataan and Bataan Death March
American/Philippine forces fought the Japanese army on the Philippine island of Luzon. They had to retreat and eventually surrendered to the Japanese. The American/Philippine prisoners(60,000-80,000 people) had to march 65 miles to a Japanese camp. Thousands of them died on the journey. -
Interment of Japanese Americans
President Franklin D. Roosevelt of the United States signed and executive ordering which imprisoned over 127,00 Japanese Americans. America was scared of them because of the war with Japan and feared there would be a Japanese revolt. -
D-Day
America tried invading Europe to take back France from Germany by storming 5 beaches, Juno, Omaha, Gold, Utah, and Sword. It caused nearly 10,000 casualties on just the allied forces. -
Battle of Iwo Jima
American forces invaded the Japanese Island of Iwo Jima. It is one of the bloodiest battles in Marine Corp history with nearly 27,000 casualties on the American Marine Corp side. There were 17,000 Japanese casualties. This was a major victory for America because they then used the island as a base of operation for there air force. -
Decision to drop atomic bombs on Japan
The decision was made by President Truman because his military experts said that if they attempted to invade Japan they would sustain high casualties due to Japans no surrender mentality. So to save American lives he made the order to drop the two atomic bombs little boy, and fat man.
