Attack of Manchuria
Despite objections from the Japanese parliament Japan's army seized Manchuria. The army then set up another government. Japan's attack was the first challenge for the League of Nations, and many memebers vigorusly protested. Japan ignored these protests and drew from the League of Nations in 1933. -
Nuremberg Laws
Deprived Jews of many rights. These rights are citizenship, jobs, and property. Also the Jews had to wear a bright yellow star to make it easy to identify them. -
Kristallnacht
Nazi storm troopers attacked Jewish homes, businesses, and synagogues across Germany and murdered 100 Jews. This night is called "Night of Broken Glass" due to all the shattered glass on main streets. -
Alliance with Italy and Germany
An agreement that is known as the Rome-Berlin Axis created the alliance between Japan, Germany, and Italy. This alliance is also known as the Axis Powers during WWII. -
Invasion of Poland
Germans invaded Poland with bombs from airplanes followed by tanks and infantry. This war startegy was called Blitzkrieg or "Lightning War". Soon Poland fell to Germany. -
Soviet Union invaded E. Poland
Stalin's secret agreement with Hilter led to the invasion of E. Poland. After E. Poland fell, Stalin took over Lithuania, Lativa, Estonia, and Finland. -
France Surrenders
Italy's Mussolini joined Hilter to take down France. By June 14 Paris had fallen and Nazi troops marched around the city. By June 22 Germans took control of northern France and left the southern half to be ruled by Petain. -
Lend Lease Act
Act which allwoed the U.S. to lend or lease arms or supplies to any country, without entering the war. By the summer of 1941 the U.S. was supplying Britian arms which led to Hilter ordering to sink any American ship. -
Battle of Britain
Battle bertween Britain and Germany where Germans bombed the cities nightly. Hilter called of his attacks to focus on Eastern Eurpoe and the Mediterranean, but the Allies learned Germany's advances can be blocked. -
German Invasion of Soviet Union
Germans invaded the Soviet Union using Blitzkrieg. The Soviet Union was not prepared for this attack although they were the largest army they were not ready or trained. As the Germans entered Russia they ran out of supplies and were not dressed for the winter but Hitler did not retreat. After reaching Moscow they ran out of supplies and had to retreat and cost the Germans 500,000 lives. -
Atlantic Charter
Decleration allowed free trade among nations and the right of people to choose thier own government. This chater later became the Allies' s peace plan at the end of WWII. -
Pearl Harbor
Japanese attack on the U.S. Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. The U.S. was aware this attck might come but it was highly unexpeceted on a Sunday morning. The Japanese sunk nearly the entire U.S. Pacific fleet. The next day Congress declared war on Japan, and the U.S. became involved in the war. -
Japanese internment (in U.S.)
Camps set up by President Rooselvelt due to Japanese Americans being a threat to the country. The military rounded up the Japanese Americans and shipped them to another location. They imprisened around 31,275 people in these camps. -
Battle of Midway
Japanese ships and planes battled the U.S. on Midway Island. 332 Japanese planes, all 4 aircraft carriers, and one support ship was destoryed by the American pilots. Yamamoto ordered Japan to withdraw on June 6. Many people think of this battle as the avenge for Pearl Harbor. -
Allied Invasion of Italy
Soldiers of Allied forces landed in Sicily and captured it from the Italians and Germans. On September 3 Italy surrendered. However fighting continued. A resistance fighter found Mussolini disgused as a German soldier and he was shot and hung the next day. -
D-Day
British, American, French and Canadian troops landed in Normandy where Germans were ready with machine guns, launchers, and cannons. Despite the thousands that died Germany retreated and the Allies liberated France, Belgium, Luxemburg, and most of the Netherlands. -
German Surrender
General Eisenhower accepted the unconditional surrender of the Third Reich from the German military. However President Rooselvelt died before the victory. On May 8 the surrender was officially signed in Berlin. -
Bombing of Hiroshima
The U.S. dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, a Japanese city of 365,000 people. Almost 73,000 people died from the bomb. -
Bombing of Nagasaki
Three days after the bombing of Hiroshima a second bomb was dropped on August 9 in Nagasaki, a city of 200,000 people. This bomb killed 37,500 people, many more died from radiation. -
Japanese surrender
After the U.S. dropped two atomic bomb on Japan they were forced to surrender. Japan surrendered to General Douglas MacArthur on the U.S. battleship Missouri in Tokyo Bay. With this surrender the war had ended.
