The Blitzkrieg is a German term for "lightning war". It was used in the invasion of Poland in 1939 and in Belgium,the Nethelands, and France in 1940. It worked very well for them and helped the German Army obtain the land that they ended up with. -

Germany invaded Poland because Hiter was trying to make up lost territory. They attacked from air and land. Hitler imposed the Blitzkrieg strategy and it worked very well. -

Operation Barbarossa was the code name for a massive invasion of Russia by the Germans. Hitler needed this so he wouldn't have to fight a 2 front war. The German army lost in Stalingrad and was forced to fight on two fronts. -

The Pearl Harbor attack was a surprise attack by the Japanese on the US Naval base in Hawaii. This attack cripled the pacific fleet and forced the US into WWII. -

The Wansee conference was the metting of SS Officers to discuss the "Final Solution". A few months later,the gas chambers proved to be the "best solution". -

The battle of midway was a naval and air battle between the United States Navy and the Japenese Navy. It was a decisive battle for the island of Midway in the Pacific. The US won the battle and gained crucial inteligence. -

Guadacanal was a huge US invasion of the island of Guadacanal. The US Marines stormed the island on August 7th 1942 and finally controlled it by February 9th 1943. The US needed the island because of its location. The Marines won the battle but lost around 7,100 soldiers. -

The battle of Stalingrad was a battle fought in Stalingrad. It was an atempt of an offensive push for the Germans. If the Germans captured Stalingrad,theoreticly,the Germans could have taken Russia. The Russians fought back and defeted the Germans. -

The D-Day invasion was an allied invasion of Normandy. The invsion was put together to help get the allies to Germany and ultimately defeat Hitler and the Nazis. The Allies eventually took the beach but suffered heavy losses. -

The Battle of the Bulge was the final offensive attack by the Germans. The battle took over a year to end. But when it did,the Allies came out on top.(The book and the HBO series is based off of the 101st airborne's time in Europe including the Battle of the Bulge.) -

The Russian Army was the first to discover the concentration camps and liberate them. This helped prove the war crimes and geocide that Hitler and the Nazis comited. -

Operation Thunderclap was the code name for the RAF (Royal Air Force) fire bombing of Dresden Germany. -

The battle of Iwo Jima was a battle in the pacific for a key island. The US Marines stormed the beaches and eventually won. The island was in a key spot for planes to take off from to invade Japan in needed. -

The battle of Okinawa was the bloodiest battle of the pacific campaign. The Japanese fortified themselves into the island instead of fortifying the coast. The allies won the battle. -
VE day
VE Day stands for Victory in Europe day. It was the formal acceptance by the Allies to accept the unconditional surrender by the Nazis. -
Dropping of the Atomic Bombs
The Atomic Bombs were droped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It was the first time a nuclear weapon was ever used. The aftermath was horrible. Japan surrendered right after the bombs were dropped. -
VJ Day
VJ Day stands for Victory over Japan Day. It was the surrender of the Japanese Army.
