France and Britian declare war (on Germany) and start a naval bloackade to German ports without providing support for Poland. German responds by attacking with U-boats and start the Battle of the Atlantic. -

Lasting from Sept. 3 '39 to May 8 '45, it was one of the longest continuing military campaign involving use of thousands of ships and though a aliied victory it came with a total loss of 3675 ships campared to the loss of 783 U-boats. Churchhill named it "Battle of the Atlantic" and it stuck. -

Germany and Romania invaded Soviet-Union
Starting on June 22 the Axis powers invaded the USSR using over four million soldiers, 600,000 motor vehicles, and 750,000 horses. along a 2,900 km (1,800 mi) front. The invasion was authorized by Hitler on 18 December 1940 and instead of it happening on the original date (May 15, 1941) the invasion began on June 22 1941. The Germans were pushed back from Moscow, despite wining some vicotries. -

Casablanca Conference
The Casablanca Conference was held at the Anfa Hotel in Casablanca, Morocco, which was then a French protectorate, from Jan. 14-Jan. 24 to plan the Allies strategies for the next phase of WWII. Some of the people in attendance were United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and representing the Free French forces, Generals Charles de Gaulle, and Henri Giraud. -
Battle of Kursk
The Battle of Kursk was a World War II engagement between German and Soviet forces on the Eastern Front near the city of Kursk in the Soviet Union in July and August 1943. It was one of the largest armored clashes and the costliest single day of aerial warfare in history. The Germans hoped to shorten their lines by eliminating the Kursk salient created in the aftermath of their defeat at the Battle of Stalingrad. What they had envisioned though was not going to be. -

The Battle of Monte Cassino, Jan. 17-May 18, started out as a the Allies fearing the Germans using the Monte Cassino abbey for part defensive line, they bombed the abbey. Then the Germans started using the rubble for shelter. The Germans were finally driven from there post but at a high cost. -
Battle of Imphal
The Battle of Imphal, Mar. 8-July 3, took place in the region around the city of Imphal, the capital of the state of Manipur in North-East India. Japanese armies attempted to destroy the Allied forces at Imphal and invade India, but were driven back into Burma with heavy losses. The defeat at Imphal was the largest defeat to that date in Japanese history. -
Battle of Kohima
The Battle of Kohima, April 4-June 22, was the turning point of the Japanese Operation U-Go. The battle took place in three stages, April 3-April 16, the Japanese attempted to capture Kohima ridge, April 18-May 13, British and Indian reinforcements counter-attacked to drive the Japanese from the positions they had captured, and, May 16-June 22, the British and Indian troops pursued the retreating Japanese and reopened the road. The battle ended on June 22. -

WWII Is Over
Japan ignored the Potsdam terms, the United States dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in early August. The Red Army quickly defeated the Japanese Army and Japan surrendered.
