Iwo Jima
Known as operation detachment because the United States fought to capture the island of Iwo Jima from the Japanese Empire. The reason to capture this island was to provide a good area for attacks on the Japanese main land. -
Battle of Okinawa
The battle of Okinawa was the largest battle on the Pacific. The objective was to seize Okinawa, a large island 340 miles away from Japan. The United States wanted to use Okinawa as a base for air operations which never happened. After bombing Hiroshima and Nagaski which forced Japan to surrender just weeks after the end of the battle of Okinawa. -
