    The Star Spangled Banner
    The Star Spangled Banner was made the national anthem in March of 1931. The congressional resolution was signed by President Herbert Hoover. This song is known for being extremely difficult to sing and is one of the most famous songs sung today.
  • Empire State Building

    Empire State Building
    President Hoover opened the worlds largest building, the Empire State building, at 380 meters tall, with 102 stories. The building is located in New York City. It is a free standing, steel frame structure.
  • Japanese Invasion of Manchuria

    Japanese Invasion of Manchuria
    In September of 1931 Japan attacked Chinese troops in Manchuria. They took over Manchuria, a chiniese harbor town, that allowed them easy access to the rest of Eastern Asia. Japan was attempting to take over all of East Asia. Just one week earlier, the League of Nations stated that there was no other time in history where war was less likely.

    Franklin D. Rosevelt was elected president in November of 1932. In his first hundred days in office he created new laws and bills and tried to change everything for the better. He made many organizations for unemployed people to make money. He came up with many things to be built so that he could provide jobs. Some of the United States most famous structures where built under him as President.

    Adlof Hitler made Chancellor
    In January of 1933 Adolf Hitler was made chancellor of Germany. Hitler quickly changed germany into a dictatorship. He was appointed by president Hindenburg. Papen was his vice-chancellor. If this wouldnt have happened, the second world war could have been prevented.

    Prohibition Ended
    When President Franklin D. Rosevelt was elected congress passes the 21st amendment. What the 21st amendment did was repeal the 18th amendment. The 21st amendment made alcohol legal once again. This made alcohol consumption a state matter now, rather than a federal issue.
  • Spanish Civil War

    Spanish Civil War
    The Spanish Civil war went from July 17th 1936 to April 1st 1939. Spain split into two groups, Republican or Loyalist and Nationalist. More than 50,000 people caught on the wrong side of the line were assassinated. On July 21st the Nationalist captured the main Spanish naval base. This egged on the war so to speak and diminished any chances of a quick ending.
  • Hindenburg

    Hindenburg
    The Hindenburg, a german passenger air ship, caught on fire while it was attempting to dock at the Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey. 35 of the 97 people that where on the ship died. It is still not known how the fire originated, but there are many theories today. This disaster ended the airship era.

    The Anschluss
    In March 1938 Germany invaded Austria. Germany's origional plan was for a union of Germany and Austria to make a greater Germany. The Treaty of Versailles forbid this from happening so all Hitler had left to do was to invade Austria, and so he did. He invaded and took over Austria.
  • Munich Conference

    Munich Conference
    Hitler met with the heads of France (Edouard Daladier), U.K. (Neville Chamberlain) and Italy (Benito Mussolini). These countries came to an agreement and signed a treaty that stated that Hitler could annex the Sudetenland, but in this agreement he was not allowed to invade any other country at all. By October 10th, Germany had occupied Sudentenland. However, Germany broke the agreement by invading and taking over all of Czechslovakia in March of 1939. Hitler could not be trusted.

    Man of the Year.
    Time magazine named Adolf Hitler, man of the year for 1938. He was named man of the year because; "the man, for better of for worse, most influenced events in the preceding year." The cover page of the issue had a drawing of victims hanging from the St. Catherines wheel as the Nazi party looked on.
  • The Non-Agression Pact

    The Non-Agression Pact
    In 1939 Hitler planned on taking over Poland, however Hitler encountered some problems. So what he did was make a pact with the Soviets. This pact stated that Germany and the Soviet Union would not attack each other. If the countries ever had any type of problem they would solve it without violence. The pact was supposed to last for ten years, however it only lasted for two.

    On September 1st the Germans invaded poland. However, on September 3rd France and Britain declared war on Germany, by the end of that week many others had followed. This war became the most wide spread war in history.

    Germany Invades Poland
    Hitler signed a non agression pact with Poland in 1934. On September 1st, 1939 Germany invaded Poland, bringing forces in from the noth, south, and west. The Polish army was quickly defeated by Hitlers army. It only took a matter of weeks. On September 28th the Polish surrendered to the Germans. This invasion caused France and Britain to declare war with Germany on September 3rd.
  • The Battle of Britain

    The Battle of Britain
    The Battle of Britain started when the German Air Force tried to gain control over Britains Royal Air Force. The battle was fought entirely by air force. It was the largest aerial bombing to that date. Germany failed to achieve their goals and in turn surrendered to Britain. This was there first major defeat.
