D-Day landing of Allied troops in Europe
Allies (largely British and American) land in North West Europe on the beaches of the Normandy coast in France. It was a massive joint services operation with naval, aerial and paratroop elements supporting the main amphibious assault (project military power ashore e.g. naval firepower). -
The Death of Hitler
There is controversy over whether Hitler died by gunshot or poison (or both!) and his body was set alight in the Reich Chancellery garden outside his bunker. Soviet propaganda surrounds Hitler’s death as they claimed possession of his burnt remains. -
VE Day – Victory in Europe Day
This date marks the official end of the War in Europe and the end of Nazi Germany. World War II Allies accepted the surrender of the armed forces of Nazi Germany. -
Atomic bombs dropped over Hiroshima and Nagasaki
These were the only nuclear weapons used during the war and to date. Although the war in Europe had ended, it was still continuing in the Pacific. America gave Japan an ultimatum of surrender or “prompt and utter destruction”. Japan ignored the ultimatum and America deployed the nuclear weapons. -

Japan’s surrender signifies the end of the war in the Pacific and also WW II.
