    German government sent a ultimatum to Belgium, wanting passage through the country so the could invade France. Belgian government refused the demands. British government told Belgium they would have military support. Germany declared war on Belgium and on August 4th, troops crossed the border.

    Germany invades France on this date according to their master strategy known as the Schlieffn Plan. Germans seek to achieve victory over France in 6 weeks. Then to focus on defeating Russia in the east region of France before Russia's 6 million man army can fully mobilize.

    Archduke Franz Ferdinand assassinated in Sarajevo
    Archduke Franz Ferdinand assassinated in Sarajevo on June 28th, 1914. He was shot to death along with his wife by a Serbian nationalist in Sarajevo, Bosnia. This is believed to be the reason of the start conflict of World War I. Because he was next in line for the Austria-Hungary thrown.

    Germans and Austrians launch a combined offensive against the Russians on the Eastern Front. Both forces are really at a stand still on eastern front. Mostly because of trench warfare causing sides to try to out wait or over power one another but fail.
