    Central Powers
    Germany, Austria-Hungry, the Ottoman Empire and Italy. Secretly formed in 1882.
  • Schlieffen Plan

    Schlieffen Plan
    German plan to take out France quickly, so it won't have to fight a two front war (Russia). German forces had to go through Belgium which was a neutral country. Afterwards Britain joined the war because it was allied with Belgium.
  • Allies

    Allies
    France, Russia, Serbia, Belgium, Britian and later on the war; America. They were either allied with Serbia or Belgium (Britian). Formal agreement or union between countries.
  • 1914 Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand

    1914 Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
    He visited the Bosnian capital Sarajevo and was assassinated because he was heir to the throne of Austria. The assassinator was Gavrilo Princip and killed him by walking out the crowd and shooting him and his wife point blank. He was part of black hand which was an organization that supported Serbia nationalism.

    Off the south coast of Ireland and 1,198 people died (all in ship) and of that total there were 128 American deaths. America's public opion was against Germany and the Central powers. The excuse was that the boat was harboring ammunition.

    2 Americans died in this attack and the US people protested. The Germans response was an agreement not to sink any more civilian ships.

    Germany lied to the US again and there were also American people in the ship that were killed or injured. This time Germany made an agreement that if America covinced Britain to stop their blockade of food and fertilizers then Germany would consider to renew their unrestricted submarine warfare.

    Germany tried to convice Mexico to join the war and attack the US and then they'll get their land back that was taken from them from the US.

    Committee on Public Information
    A newspaper business owned by government that used propaganda to support the war. The head of the agency Creel, hired about 75,000 men to give speeches in public supporting the war that were called "4 minute men" because they said 4 minute speeches. But they also angered many ethnic groups and opponents of war.
  • Selective Service Act of 1917

    Selective Service Act of 1917
    Young men were forced to sign in the list and were randomly selected to fight in the war. Only three forths of the 2 million men sent to Europe actually saw combat and one out of five were foriegn from the 24 million that were registered. Most didn't have a high school diploma, 3 million men were chosen, and 400 thousand were black and served in seperate fields from white people.

    President set up the food administration under Herbert Hoover which was to be used to save food. He made porkless, wheatless, sweetless. and meatless days and urged the saying "the clean plate" to be recognized and used in every meal. Restaurants put bread after the first course instead of sugar bowls.

    It decreased variety in many commercial products and saved fuel by making rules throughout the week for all Americans and increased industrial production by 20% and also encouraged industries to use mass-production techniques.

    National War Labor Board
    Worked on making factory working conditions better and told workers that they had a choice between fighting or working. Pushed for 8 hour work days, enforced the child labor ban and promoted safety inspections.
  • Espionage and Sedition Acts

    Espionage and Sedition Acts
    Person fined $10,000 and sentenced 20 years in jail if they said anything bad, disloyal, or anything that'll interfer with the war effort negatively.
  • Battle of the Somme

    Battle of the Somme
    One the most bloodiest battles fought in the war, lasted almost 5 whole months. At the end of the battle there were over 1.5 million casualties and fought in France.
  • Second Battle of Marne

    Second Battle of Marne
    The American is hekping turn the tide of the war and were playing a major role in the Allied powers. The battle of Marne was the last major German Defense. The US helped win the battle.
  • Convoy System

    Convoy System
    System that placed a protective barrier in front of merchant ships crossing the Atlantic Ocean. Some destroyers were placed in front of the merchant ships and merchant ship losses were cut in half. US also set mines 230 miles across the North sea from Scotland to Norway.

    Austria-Hungary surrenders to the Allies
    Austria-Hungary most likely surrendered because the tide was turning against the Central Powers and they were also probably tired of war. The US was making difference in war.
  • Established of the German Republic

    Established of the German Republic
    The German soldiers mutined against the government athority and were starting revolutions in Germany that spread quickly. The socialist leaders in the capital started German Republic and the Kaiser gave up the throne.
  • Cease-fire and armistice

    Cease-fire and armistice
    There was no battle or any allie attacking or even set foot on Germany, but the Germans were tired of war. They signed the arimistice and ceased-fire.
