Archduke Assassination: The Spark Of WWI
Archduke is an Austrian prince that was well admired and looked up to. He was assassinated in Sarajevo and this later caused a chain of events that was led up to WWI. -
Russia Intervenes
Russia gets ready to intervene with Austria-Hungary with its massive army in favor of their ally, Serbia. This event got the European Powers involved which obviously led to war and hostile acts. -
WWI Has Now Begun
All the hostile, tragic, events have now led up to the upbringing of this long hard fought 4 year war. What started the war was Germany invading Belgium.
Many diseases were caused during the war due to the conditions of the 8 feet deep trenches the most common, trench foot due to their feet deteriorating from standing in the rain water and also diseases from rats biting them. -
Germany's Involvement
Germany was at war with France and Russia during this time which was originated in the Balkans region when Archduke was assassinated. During this war Germany fired shells with chlorine gas at allied lines in attempt to breach although the French lines were near to collapsing Germany failed. -
Lusitania Sinks
A German submarine sinks Lusitania which held 1,198 people 128 of them being Americans. At that time the U.S was neutral and wanted no part of the war. The sinking of Lusitania is what brought the U.S into the war. -
First Tanks
The British produced the first ever tanks. Although they were not used as weapons or artillery they did clear paths for soldiers and break through barricades. -
U.S Enters The War
The Congress passed a declaration of war against Germany since they attacked The Lusitania with American passengers in it. We, the U.S entered the war on sides with Great Britain and France. Before the U.S entered the war they were neutral until the betrayal. -
Frank Buckles: WWI Veteran Enlisted
Frank Buckles, enlisted at just 16 years old many branches turned him down due to his age, or size. He was later sent to a camp in Colorado and got enlisted in the U.S Army. -
Frank going overseas
Frank belonged to a unit of 102 men called the First Ft. Riley Casual Detachment. Frank often referred "casual" to unassigned due to him having no set and stone position and floated around. However Frank and his unit were sent overseas on the ship Carpathia. -
Frank's arrival in France
Frank got a job driving an ambulance to help injured soldiers on the battlefield. Most other units took other tasks and challenges that needed to be completed but Frank was alone and by himself while other people were in groups. -
Germany and Russia come to peace
Germany signed a treaty with the Russian government. This granted them large areas of land and peace in the east. Having gained peace in the east the western front allowed them to place soldiers there to fight off France, Britain, and the U.S -
Kaiser Wilhelm II
The great German emperor played a major role in World War I. He kept Germany from winning the war. He made sure his generals did not mobilize the German army or make it stronger. -
Armistice Day
The treaty signed where both sides agreed to stop fighting. Thus, World War I has finally come to an end. -
Returning Home
After 2 years with the American Forces in England, Frank Woodruff Buckles returned home. He was then stationed again and left to serve in WWII but would return. -
Frank's Death: The ending of a hero
Frank was the last surviving WWI veteran. He earned many accomplishments throughout his lifetime and served his country as he always wished.
