Archduke was assassinated
The Archduke of Austria-Hungary Franz Ferdinand and his duchess Sophie were in a parade in Bosnia. He was killed by a Serbian Nationalist group called the Black Hand. They believed that Bosnia belonged to Serbia. This sparked tension between Austria-Hungary and later lite the fuse for WWI. -

WWI Begins
On August fourth 1914 Germany invaded Belgium on its way to France. Belgium was an allie of france, and this started WWI. -
The Lusitania is Sunk by Germany
Germany was using submarines to sink any ships heading to Great Britain to keep the U.S. from aiding them. Germany used one of their submarines to sink a British cruise ship called the Lusitania. President Woodrow Wilson was furious. There was about 100 Americans On the the Lusitania and this was one of the last two reasons America decided to join the war. -
The 12 year old Soldier
Sidney Lewis was a British soldier in World war one. He was different from his companions because he was only 12 years old. He had lied when registering so that he could serve his country. This wasn’t uncommon for kids to lie about their age to join the military. Some were just patriotic, but for others it was a way to get away from their lives back home. -
Letter to Mother From Edgar D. Andrews
He tells his mother about how his training is going. telling her the time goes by fast because of their drills. He also goes into detail about how bad the conditions are. There’s Mud, rain, and snow. -
Zimmerman Telegraph
America and Mexico were both neutral in the war, but Germany was seeking help from Mexico. They went behind America’s back to Mexico for help in the war. It also said that if America joined the war against Germany Mexico would retain control of Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. This was intercepted by Great Britain. America then joined the war against Germany. -
Congress passes the Selective Service Act
Congress passed the Selective service act which approved the draft. President wilson receives criticism for signing the bill into law. Some felt he was destroying the very thing that we were fighting for in Europe. -
An explosion heard 140 Miles away
During the war a group of miners were secretly digging tunnels up to 100 feet underground,under the feet of soldiers. The best success was at Messines Ridge in Belgium, where 900,000lbs of explosives were set of in 19 different underground tunnels. This destroyed much of the German frontline. The explosion was so loud that the British prime minister heard it 140 miles away in Downing st. -
Cartoons clipped from the New York Tribune
Edgar’s family sent him a clipping of the newspaper cartoons. They probably wanted to pick his spirits up after being in the war. They also wrote to him at the bottom and told him Merry X-Mas. -
Christmas Card to his Family
On December 3rd, 1917 Edgar sent a postcard to his family telling them how much he misses them and would like to spend Christmas with them. The postcard was made of silk and was very nice. On the Front of the postcard It said Honneur, which is French for Honor. Above it showed The flags of France, Italy, Great Britain, Russia, and Germany. -
The Battle of Belleau woods
U.S. Marine corps start an attack on the Germans that takes place across a field of wheat. They suffer huge casualties. The battle finally ends after a expulsion of the Germans that was marked as the farthest German advance on Paris. The area was exchanged six times during the battle that lasted three weeks. -
Letter to miss Sarah E. Andrews from Sen. John W. Weeks of MA.
Senator John Weeks tells Edgar’s mother that because of Edgar’s serivce to his country if there is anything she needs she can ask him for help. -
Certificate of insurance
Edgar’s family received a certificate of insurance from the bureau of war risk. It gave $10,000 in insurance to Edgar or his family if he were to die or get injured. -

The battle of Cantigny is the first major battle for the U.S. The battle was small but it was the first of many important attacks for the U.S. -
Armistice Day
On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month and Armistice was signed. This ended the war on Germany’s western front, thus ending the war. It was later renamed Veterans day in the U.S
