Triple Alliance
An alliance between Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. It was an agreement to support each other if they were attacked by Russia or France. It was one of the main reasons that WWI started. -

It was an alliance between Great Britain, France, and Russia. It was formed as a counter action towards the triple alliance. Now their are two different sides in Europe which starts disputes between them. -
Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
He was heir to the throne in Austria Hungary. He was killed by Gavrilo Princip. This lead to a great dispute between Austria-Hungary and Serbia which led to war. -
Russia mobiles an army
Russia supports Serbia after the Austria-Hungary declared war. Russia starts to mobilize an army to help. This causes more countries to enter because of the alliances. -
Austria-Hungary declares war
The assassination of the Archduke was committed by a person from Serbia. Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia. Germany supports Austria-Hungary by providing money for their army. -
Germany enters the war
Germany declares war on Russia and France. This causes a two front war on the east and west. They create the Schlieffen plan to start in France and then Russia. -
Great Britain enters the war
After their allies enter the war Britain joins. Germany went through Belgium which wanted to stay neutral. In response Britain sends troops to the western front. -
Battle of Marne
Germany's goal was to encircle French troops. They were stopped by the French and British in the Battle of Marne. This was when trench warfare was created. -
German success in the eastern front
The eastern front was fought between German and Russian soldiers. The russian soldiers were untrained and some didn't have weapons. This lead to success for Germany which allowed them to focus on the western front. -
Trench Warfare
Trench warfare was invented during WWI. Both sides would dig into the ground to protect themselves. This causes battles to last for months because both sides could make little progress. -
New weapons and vehicles
As the war progressed so did the technology. They created machine guns and a poison gas. They also created the first version of the tank and airplanes to use for recon. -
Armenian Genocide
The war put the Ottoman empire to their breaking point. This caused the country to be divided and started on of the worst genocides in history. There were marches and 1.5 million deaths. -
Battle of Verdun
The battle of Verdun was fought on the western front in France. It was a 9 month battle and there were 700,000 casualties. It showed that war would be a war of attrition. -
Battle of the Somme
The British and French attacked on German soil. They pushed the Germans back and weakened them. It caused over a million causalities. -
The United States enter the war
After the Lusitania was sunk and the U.S. got the Zimmermann Note they entered the war. They provided troops for the allies. WIth the new american troops the allies had the upper hand. -
Impact from the war
As the war went on countries were experiencing problems in their countries. They had to control prices and rationed food. Drafts started to get more troops and they used propaganda. -
Russian Revolution
During the war Russian forces were weak and their leaders kept sending in troops with little training and no weapons. The Bolsheviks saw the opportunity to start a revolution. They promised an end to war. -
Armistice to the war
After Russia withdrew from the war Germany went on the offensive. They pushed towards Paris but were drafted in the second Battle of the Marne. An armistice was signed on November 11, 1918. -
Fall of the Ottoman Empire
After the war the Ottoman Empire was dissolved by the Allies. It was split up into different countries. The major one being Turkey led by Kemal Mustafa Ataturk. -
Treaty of Versailles
The peace treaty that officially ended the war. The big four countries came together and made Germany sign it. It took away a lot from Germany and caused a decline in government trust and economy.
