Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated while visiting Sarajevo, Bosnia. he was next in line for the Austro- Hungarian throne. The killings set off decades old tensions in Europe and started WWI. -
Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbua
Gavrilo Princip was a member of a Serbian nationalist group assassinated Franz Ferdinand. Austria-Hungary blamed Serbia the for the assassination, so they declared war. -
First use of gas as a weapon by the Germans
Mustard gas and tear gas were to weapons created by the Germans that played a big part in the first global war. -
Sinking of the Lusitania
The Germans were not satisfied with the U.S. trading with the allies. They declared that if any U.S. boats passed through their land, they would sink them. The Lusitania was a passenger ship but was holding weapons. It was sunk by a German U-Boat which is a submarine. This did not leave the U.S. happy. -
Wilson reelected; pledged American neutrality
Pledging neutrality is when Wilson decided to trade goods for BOTH sides of the war. Which means not picking sides(staying neutral). Germany started to get upset with the fact that they were trading with their opponents. -
Zimmermann Note
The Zimmerman's Note proposed that Germany and Mexico would form a military alliance. They created this prior to the United States added on to the war. -
US declares war
Due to the sinking of the Lusitania and the Sussex, the US was not happy. They tried to stay out of the war but it didn't quite work. President Wilson declared war on the Germans because of this. -
Bolsheviks over through the Russian government
The provisional government came to power after the February Revolution resulted in the Russian monarchy being overthrown in March 1917. They were lead by Vladimir Lenon. -
WWI ends
World War One ended at 11 AM on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, in 1918(November 11, 1918). Germany signed an armistice (an agreement for peace and no more fighting).This ended WWI. -
The Treaty of Versailles
World War I officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919. The treaty made Germany take full responsibility for the war. They also had to pay for any damage made during the war.
