    The Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor. In 'Farewell to Manzanar" by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houstion all Japanese people are forced to evacuate America even if they are Amercan citizens because the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and Japanese people were feared so they were sent to internment camps.

  • Big Idea

    Our Big Idea is that if one person fears or hates a certain group of people and they share that fear or hate that person can make a huge difference. For example, Hitler hated Jewish people and he shared that hate which led to concentration camps and the mass-slaughter of Jews. Another example is the fear of Japanese people because of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. When Pearl Harbor was bombed many American citizens shared the fear of Japanese people which led to internment camps.

    Congress passes a law saying Japanese aliens may become U.S. citizens. In "Farewell to Manzanar" Jeanne and her family, who are Japanese, can finally become U.S. citizens. For example, Jeanne's father lived in the U.S. for quite a while but he wasn't allowed to become a U.S. citizen and now he can.
