    Women begin helping the war effort. They delivered planes for the Army (the Air Force was not its own branch yet). Though the US was not officially part of the war, women were already helping out.

    Japan attacks Pearl Harbor, HI inspiring the US to enter World War II. President Roosevelt announces the US is joining the Allies and the nation is soon producing 40% of the world’s weapons.

    Pearl Harbor inspires 60,000 men to join the US military. Their clothes are Government Issued and the troops are soon nicknamed “GI”. Recruits visit basic training and practice for war.

    Roosevelt signs an order telling Japanese Americans that they must relocate. They were sent to camps under the belief that they were not loyal to the US. They were discriminated against and treated unjustly before they were sent to camps. The camps were poorly funded and mistreatment continued.

    Due to “separate but equal” laws, segregation was allowed and enforced in the US military. The air force’s first African American unit was nicknamed the “Tuskegee Airmen”. These men flew over 200 missions without losing a member.

    Alfred’s job with the Army is as a 922 Cavalry Recon . Around the time of the Battle of the Bulge, his unit joined the 3rd Army under General Patton and went into Germany. They were told they would be headed to Japan but then the atomic bomb is dropped. Troops were then to be sent to Japan to occupy or be discharged. He was sent back to the states.

    Iwo Jima. Japan is near Tokyo and is the site of a large battle. 60,000 US marines arrived. Nearly 7,000 died. The US captured the island.

    The first of two bombs are dropped in Japan. Hiroshima was the drop site for the first atomic bomb. Nagasaki was the second site and was bombed three days later. Between the two cities. About 100,000 people died, most were civilians.

    Due to a paperwork error, the government believes Alfred has not registered for the draft and call his mother to find him. They say he has two days to register. She tries to explain that he is already in the Army, but they don’t believe her for a long time.

    Alfred was sent Fort Knox KY at the end of the war. Though he was supposed to head for Japan, the decision to drop the atomic bomb changed the Army’s plan for him. He was enlisted, not drafted, so he stayed in the states to finish out his time promised to the army.

    The Nuremberg Trials convict 22 Nazi leaders. A dozen were sentenced to death. This was part of the punishment the Allies served on German and Japanese leaders.
