    -09/1939 to 05/1945
    -Battle of the Atlantic, starts by the German navy on Allied shipping between America and Europe during WW2. By that time German forces had sunk some supply ships coming to Britain from other countries. After June, Allied naval escorts provided continual convoy protection, which about half the naval escorts, primarily corvettes to protect shipping convoys were provied by Canada and in Sept American forces were committed to the task.
  • Battle of Britain

    -10 July to 31 October 1940
    -The battle of Britain was a precursor to Operation Sea Lion, Hitler's plan to capture England. But in order for him to land troops on British soil, he first had to control the air and destroy Great Britain's Royal Air Force.
    -The British turned to Canada for support. Canada began to produce Hurricane fighters and train pilots to defend Britain.
    -Although the Germans had more planes and pilots, the British were able to fight them off and win the battle.

    -Japan wanted to become a strong country and a world leader. In 1937 Japan invaded China. They wanted to dominate all of Southeast Asia. Japan was worried that the US would try and stop them from taking over some countries. They decided to attack the US Navy hoping they could sink enough ships to keep the US from ever attacking Japan. The US joined the Allies.

    -Japanese invaders overwhelmed Canadian and other troops defending Hong Kong. In November 1941, Canada sent 1975 troops to help garrison the British colony of Hong Kong, but the Canadians were not fully equipped. On 7 December 1941, Japan entered the war with a series of successful offensives in Asia and across the Pacific Ocean. The Japanese invaded Hong Kong on 8 December and overran its meagre defence.

    -Royal Canadian Air Force(RCAF) was small in 1939, but by 1945, it had grown to be the world’s fourth- largest air force. Most of continental Europe had fallen to the Nazis and Hitler was preparing to launch a full-scale invation of Great Britain. Canadians bombed German cities at night trying to destroy factories that made war supplies, but it wasn't very successful.

    The Dieppe Raid
    -On 19 August 1942, the Allies launched a major raid on the small French coast port of Dieppe. Operation Jubilee was the first Canadian Army engagement in the European war, designed to test the Allies' ability to launch amphibious assaults against Adolf Hitler's "Fortress Europe." The raid was a disaster: More than 900 Canadian soldiers were killed, and thousands more were wounded and taken prisoner. Despite the bloodshed, the raid provided valuable lessons for other countries.

    -The Allies agreed helping to invade Germany and decided to use Italy as a platform to attack enemy territory in Europe and help divert German resources from the Eastern Front. After 1 month Sicily was captured by Canadians. Then by using “mouse-holding “technique, Canadians successfully capture the key city Ortona, but over 5900 sodiers were killed in the campaign.

    Allied troops stormed German defences on the beaches of Normandy (France) to open the way to Germany from the West. The task was formidable. The Germans had turned the coastline into a continuous fortress of guns, pillboxes, razor wire, mines and beach obstacles. Victory in the Normandy campaign, however, would come at a terrible cost.
  • The Liberation of Europe

    -After D-Day, the Allies took two months to breakout into the rest of France.
    -British draw most of the German forces towards Caen.
    -Americans smashed out and began to drive across France.
    -Hitler ordered his army to stay where they were and not retreat.
    -Allies trap nearly 250,000 Germans near Falaise.
    -The Germans didn't have enough forces left in northern France to stop the country being liberated.
